Asian Stock Market Trading Hours: UK Times for Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai
Asian stock market trading hours are not one single session. Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai each use their own local clock, auction rules, lunch breaks and holiday calendar. For UK investors, the same Asian opening can also appear one hour later on the UK clock during British Summer Time (BST) than it does during Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
The practical starting point is therefore exchange-by-exchange: identify the cash-market session you actually want to trade, convert it into UK time, then check whether the exchange is open on that local date. A broker may also quote an index CFD or another derivative outside the underlying cash-market session, but that does not mean the stock exchange itself is open.
The table below uses the current official cash-equity schedules published by Japan Exchange Group, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
Asian stock market hours at a glance for UK investors
| Exchange | Local cash-equity sessions | UK time on GMT | UK time on BST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Stock Exchange (JST, UTC+9) | 09:00–11:30; 12:30–15:30 | 00:00–02:30; 03:30–06:30 | 01:00–03:30; 04:30–07:30 |
| Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKT, UTC+8) | 09:30–12:00; 13:00–16:00* | 01:30–04:00; 05:00–08:00* | 02:30–05:00; 06:00–09:00* |
| Shanghai Stock Exchange (CST, UTC+8) | 09:30–11:30; 13:00–14:57, then closing auction to 15:00 | 01:30–03:30; 05:00–06:57, close 07:00 | 02:30–04:30; 06:00–07:57, close 08:00 |
*Hong Kong has a pre-opening auction from 09:00 to 09:30 local time and a closing auction for eligible securities from 16:00 to a random close between 16:08 and 16:10. The table shows the main continuous trading sessions.
These UK conversions are clock conversions, not promises that a particular UK broker will accept orders in every security at every phase. Order types, market access, Stock Connect eligibility, data subscriptions and broker cut-off times can differ.
Why GMT and BST change the UK trading time
Japan, Hong Kong and mainland China keep fixed local offsets from UTC for these exchanges, while the UK changes between GMT and BST. During GMT, UK time equals UTC. During BST, the UK clock is one hour ahead of UTC, so an Asian session appears one hour later on a UK clock even though the exchange has not changed its local opening time.
For example, Tokyo opens at 09:00 JST throughout the year. That is 00:00 GMT in the UK winter and 01:00 BST in the UK summer. GOV.UK publishes the official UK clock-change dates.
Avoid building an automated schedule from a static UK-time table without a time-zone-aware calendar. A correctly configured system should store the exchange timezone and convert to Europe/London dynamically.
Tokyo Stock Exchange trading hours
Tokyo Stock Exchange cash equities trade in two auction sessions. The Japan Exchange Group trading-hours page lists the morning session as 09:00–11:30 JST and the afternoon session as 12:30–15:30 JST. Orders can be accepted before the formal session starts, but order acceptance is not the same as continuous execution.
Tokyo times in the UK
- GMT: 00:00–02:30, then 03:30–06:30.
- BST: 01:00–03:30, then 04:30–07:30.
- Lunch break: 11:30–12:30 JST, equivalent to 02:30–03:30 GMT or 03:30–04:30 BST.
A common outdated schedule still shows Tokyo closing at 15:00 JST. TSE extended the afternoon cash-equity session by 30 minutes from November 2024, making 15:30 JST the current regular close. JPX documented that change when it introduced the longer session.
Hong Kong Stock Exchange trading hours
HKEX uses multiple phases rather than one uninterrupted stock-market window. The official HKEX securities-market schedule shows a pre-opening session, morning continuous trading, an extended morning period for applicable securities, an afternoon session and a closing auction.
Hong Kong core sessions
- Pre-opening session: 09:00–09:30 HKT.
- Morning continuous trading: 09:30–12:00 HKT.
- Afternoon continuous trading: 13:00–16:00 HKT.
- Closing Auction Session: 16:00 to a random close between 16:08 and 16:10 for securities covered by the closing-auction mechanism.
Hong Kong times in the UK
- Morning session on GMT: 01:30–04:00; afternoon: 05:00–08:00.
- Morning session on BST: 02:30–05:00; afternoon: 06:00–09:00.
- The closing auction can extend the effective close to roughly 08:08–08:10 GMT or 09:08–09:10 BST for eligible securities.
The HKEX pre-opening documentation explains that the opening phase is an auction rather than normal continuous trading. The closing-auction documentation likewise separates the 16:00 reference-price and order phases from the final random close.
Shanghai Stock Exchange trading hours
Shanghai also separates opening, continuous and closing-auction phases. Under the current Shanghai Stock Exchange trading rules, the opening call auction runs 09:15–09:25, continuous auction trading runs 09:30–11:30 and 13:00–14:57, and the closing call auction runs 14:57–15:00 local time.
Shanghai times in the UK
- Opening auction on GMT: 01:15–01:25; on BST: 02:15–02:25.
- Morning continuous session on GMT: 01:30–03:30; on BST: 02:30–04:30.
- Afternoon continuous session on GMT: 05:00–06:57; on BST: 06:00–07:57.
- Closing auction finishes at 07:00 GMT or 08:00 BST.
Shanghai Stock Exchange also publishes product-specific arrangements such as block trading and after-hours fixed-price trading for the STAR Market. Those should not be mixed into a simple answer about the regular A-share cash-equity session.
Do Asian stock markets close for lunch?
Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai all have a midday break in their principal cash-equity schedule, but the exact structure differs. Tokyo pauses between 11:30 and 12:30 JST. Shanghai pauses between the 11:30 morning close and 13:00 afternoon restart. Hong Kong’s main morning continuous session ends at 12:00 and the afternoon session begins at 13:00, while HKEX also defines an Extended Morning Session for applicable securities.
This matters for order planning. A broker may accept an order while the continuous market is paused, but execution can wait for the next eligible auction or session. A limit order is therefore not guaranteed to fill simply because the platform accepts it.
How to check whether an Asian stock market is open today
For “stock market trading hours today” searches, a static weekday schedule is only the first check. Before assuming the market is open, verify all of the following:
- The local date at the exchange, not just the current date in the UK.
- Whether that local date is a Saturday or Sunday.
- The exchange holiday calendar or any announced special closure or half day.
- The current market phase: pre-open auction, continuous trading, lunch break, closing auction or closed.
- Whether your broker supports that exchange, security and order type at that time.
Exchange holidays differ by country. Japan, Hong Kong and mainland China can close on dates when London is open, and the reverse is also true. Use each exchange’s official calendar rather than a generic global-market calendar.
Exchange hours are not the same as broker trading hours
UK platforms can provide several different kinds of Asian-market exposure: direct shares, depositary receipts, ETFs, index futures, CFDs, spread bets or other derivatives. These products can have trading windows that differ from the underlying exchange.
If a broker shows a Nikkei, Hang Seng or China index quote while the local cash exchange is closed, the quote may be based on futures, another reference market or the broker’s own derivative pricing methodology. Do not describe that as the Tokyo, Hong Kong or Shanghai stock exchange being open. The same distinction matters in the US stock market hours guide, where cash equities, indices, ETFs and futures also have different sessions.
Access considerations for UK investors
Direct market access can depend on the broker
Not every UK retail broker offers direct dealing on every Asian exchange. Mainland China access can also depend on the route used, such as eligible Stock Connect arrangements, and the trading calendar can require both linked markets and settlement banking services to be available. The Shanghai Stock Exchange Stock Connect material explains that eligible trading days depend on both Shanghai and Hong Kong being open and on settlement-day banking availability.
Currency conversion affects the economic result
A UK investor buying a Japanese, Hong Kong or mainland Chinese share can have both equity-price risk and currency risk. A local-currency gain can translate into a smaller sterling gain—or a sterling loss—if the exchange rate moves against the investor. Check the broker’s FX conversion method and fees rather than treating the local share return as the final GBP return.
Market data may be delayed
A platform can display delayed quotes unless the user has the required real-time data entitlement. This matters most around opens, auctions and fast-moving news. Verify whether the price is live, delayed or indicative before placing an order.
Liquidity, spreads and order execution
Liquidity is security-specific and session-specific. It is not accurate to say that the whole Asian session is always less liquid than London or New York. A heavily traded Tokyo or Hong Kong large-cap can be highly liquid during its local session, while a small-cap can remain thin throughout the day.
The opening and closing auctions can concentrate orders, while spreads and depth can change around lunch breaks, local economic releases and unexpected headlines. For UK-based traders operating overnight, fatigue adds a separate operational risk: an inconvenient clock time is not a market edge.
- Prefer limit orders when price certainty matters more than immediate execution, while recognising that a limit order may not fill.
- Check the spread and visible depth rather than assuming the quoted last price is executable for your full size.
- Know the market phase before submitting an order; auction and continuous-session rules differ.
- Review broker fees, FX conversion charges, custody costs and local taxes or levies where applicable.
- Use alerts or time-zone-aware calendars instead of relying on memory for GMT/BST conversions.
What UK traders should monitor before an Asian session
The useful preparation depends on the market. Japan-sensitive traders may watch Bank of Japan communication, yen moves and domestic macro releases. Hong Kong and mainland China traders may watch Chinese economic data, policy announcements, property and credit conditions, and Stock Connect flows where relevant. Company-specific earnings and corporate actions can matter more than any broad “Asian session” narrative.
For traders comparing different holding periods, the trading styles guide explains why scalping, day trading, swing trading and position trading impose different monitoring and execution demands. A trading simulator can also help test order handling without assuming simulated fills will perfectly match live Asian-market execution.
Bottom line
For UK investors, Asian stock-market timing is best handled exchange by exchange. Tokyo’s current regular sessions are 09:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 JST; Hong Kong’s main continuous sessions are 09:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:00 HKT with separate auctions; Shanghai’s continuous sessions are 09:30–11:30 and 13:00–14:57 CST with a closing auction to 15:00.
Convert those local times to GMT or BST, then confirm the local trading date, holiday calendar, market phase and broker access. That is more reliable than treating “Asia” as one session or assuming a derivative quote means the underlying cash exchange is open.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the Asian stock market open in the UK?
There is no single Asian stock market opening time. Tokyo cash equities open at 00:00 GMT or 01:00 BST, while the Hong Kong and Shanghai continuous sessions open at 01:30 GMT or 02:30 BST. Each exchange also has its own auction phases and lunch break.
What are the Tokyo Stock Exchange hours in UK time?
Tokyo Stock Exchange cash equities trade 09:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 JST. That converts to 00:00–02:30 and 03:30–06:30 GMT, or 01:00–03:30 and 04:30–07:30 BST.
What are the Hong Kong Stock Exchange hours in UK time?
Hong Kong’s main continuous sessions are 09:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:00 HKT. In the UK that is 01:30–04:00 and 05:00–08:00 GMT, or 02:30–05:00 and 06:00–09:00 BST. A closing auction can continue for eligible securities until a random close between 16:08 and 16:10 HKT.
What are the Shanghai Stock Exchange hours in UK time?
Shanghai continuous trading runs 09:30–11:30 and 13:00–14:57 local time, followed by a closing auction to 15:00. That is 01:30–03:30 and 05:00–06:57 GMT with a 07:00 close, or 02:30–04:30 and 06:00–07:57 BST with an 08:00 close.
Do Asian stock markets close for lunch?
Many major Asian cash-equity markets have a midday break. Tokyo pauses from 11:30 to 12:30 JST, Shanghai from 11:30 to 13:00 local time, and Hong Kong’s main continuous morning session ends at noon before the 13:00 afternoon session.
How does British Summer Time affect Asian market hours?
The Asian exchanges keep their local schedules, but the UK clock moves one hour ahead of UTC during BST. As a result, the same Asian session appears one hour later on a UK clock during BST than during GMT.
Can I trade Asian markets when the local stock exchange is closed?
Possibly, but the product may be a derivative, futures contract, ETF on another venue or broker-defined out-of-hours instrument rather than the underlying local shares. Check exactly what instrument is being quoted, its trading hours and how the provider prices it.
How do I know if an Asian stock market is open today?
Check the exchange’s local date and time, weekend status, official holiday calendar and current market phase. Then confirm that your broker supports the security and order type at that time. A UK weekday does not guarantee that an Asian exchange is open.
