GBP/CAD 24-Hour Change

The pound slipped 0.11 percent against the Canadian dollar in the last session, moving from 1.8837 to 1.8817. Routine drift on a pair averaging 0.17 percent a day.

GBP/CAD 7-Day Change

Over seven days GBP/CAD rose 0.29 percent, up from 1.8763. A modest sterling week, spread across the sessions rather than concentrated in one.

GBP/CAD 30-Day Change

Over 30 days GBP/CAD rose 0.39 percent, up from 1.8744, a base that was also the monthly low. The pair trades a shade below its 30 day average of 1.8831. Sterling holds the month’s gain, but the edge is slim and fading.

What Affects the GBP to CAD Exchange Rate?

GBP/CAD moves on the policy gap between the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, and on the price of oil. The Canadian dollar is a commodity currency tied closely to crude, and it also tracks the US dollar more than any other major currency because of Canada’s trade dependence on the United States.

  • Bank of Canada policy. BoC rate decisions and guidance move the Canadian dollar directly. A widening UK to Canada rate gap lifts GBP/CAD.
  • Bank of England policy. Rate decisions, MPC vote splits, and forward guidance move sterling on the other side of the pair.
  • Oil prices. Canada is a major crude exporter. When oil rises, the Canadian dollar tends to strengthen and GBP/CAD falls.
  • The US economy. Roughly three quarters of Canadian exports go to the United States. US growth data and Federal Reserve policy move the Canadian dollar almost as much as Canadian data does.
  • Global risk sentiment. The Canadian dollar is a moderately risk-sensitive currency. It softens when markets turn defensive, which pushes GBP/CAD up.
  • UK macro data. Inflation, wage growth and GDP shape Bank of England expectations. Worth remembering that on this pair, US data lands on the Canadian side of the equation and can outweigh the UK release entirely.

GBP/CAD Market Context for Traders

GBP/CAD is a cross rate that pairs a news-driven currency with a commodity currency that behaves partly like the US dollar. That last point is what catches people out. Traders who read this pair purely as a UK versus Canada story miss that a large part of the Canadian dollar’s direction is set in Washington and in the oil market.

Current GBP/CAD Trend

Mildly sterling-positive, and cooling. GBP/CAD is up 0.39 percent over 30 days but has slipped back under its 30 day average of 1.8831, well short of the monthly high at 1.8934. The month’s gain is intact; the momentum behind it is not.

GBP/CAD Volatility Snapshot

Average daily movement over the past 30 days was 0.17 percent, with the largest single session move at 0.64 percent, set on 24 August. That makes GBP/CAD the second calmest of the sterling crosses covered here, ahead of only GBP/EUR.

Pair 30 day range Average daily move
GBP/JPY 3.36% 0.34%
GBP/USD 2.76% 0.23%
GBP/AUD 1.83% 0.23%
GBP/CAD 1.01% 0.17%
GBP/EUR 0.47% 0.09%

Low average volatility does not mean low risk. Even inside this one percent month, the single session of 24 August covered 0.64 percent, close to two thirds of the entire band. Volatility rises around Bank of Canada and Bank of England announcements, UK inflation releases, US non-farm payrolls, and crude oil inventory data. The Forex Complex Team Insights

The GBP/CAD rate gives a useful snapshot of the current exchange value, but traders should also review volatility, market sentiment, and upcoming economic events before making decisions. This pair is a good example of why an average is not a forecast. Thirty days of 0.17 percent daily moves say nothing about a session like 24 August, which covered 0.64 percent on its own. The Forex Complex team recommends using this converter together with live forex signals, technical analysis, and proper risk management.

GBP to CAD FAQs

How much is 1 GBP in CAD today?

One pound buys 1.8756 Canadian dollars at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. The figure in the converter refreshes every hour.

How much is 100 pounds to Canadian dollars?

100 pounds converts to 187.56 Canadian dollars at the current reference rate of 1 GBP = 1.8756 CAD. Banks, bureaux de change, and transfer providers apply their own margin, so the amount you actually receive will be lower than this mid-market figure.

Is GBP getting stronger against CAD?

Marginally, and the edge is fading. GBP/CAD is up 0.39 percent over 30 days, but it has slipped back below its 30 day average of 1.8831 and sits 1.1 percent under the 2026 high of 1.9032. Call it a sterling month, not a sterling trend.

Why is CAD so weak?

Against sterling the Canadian dollar has softened slightly this month, so the premise holds, just. GBP/CAD is up 0.39 percent over 30 days. The usual drivers are the oil price, since Canada is a major crude exporter, the Bank of Canada holding rates below the Bank of England, and the Canadian dollar’s tendency to follow the US dollar given that around three quarters of Canadian exports go to the United States. Over the longer run the picture is the reverse: GBP/CAD fell to 1.4575 in September 2022, its lowest in ECB records, when the Canadian dollar was at its strongest against the pound.

What is the highest the CAD has ever been against the pound?

The Canadian dollar’s strongest recorded level against sterling was 28 September 2022, when GBP/CAD fell to 1.4575. That is the lowest reading in European Central Bank records going back to 1999. The other extreme was 13 January 1999, when GBP/CAD reached 2.5583 and the Canadian dollar was at its weakest.

Why does the GBP to CAD exchange rate change?

GBP/CAD changes constantly because both currencies trade in an open global market. The main drivers are the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, crude oil prices, and the health of the US economy. Because Canada exports so heavily to the United States, this pair often moves on American data rather than Canadian data.

Is the pound stronger than the Canadian dollar?

Yes. At 1.8756, one pound buys nearly two Canadian dollars, so sterling has the higher nominal value. This does not mean the UK economy is stronger than Canada’s. Nominal exchange rates reflect historical convention and current market pricing, not relative economic strength.

Can I use this GBP/CAD rate for forex trading?

Benchmark, not quote. The ECB sets one mid-market rate per working day. Brokers quote a bid and an ask around it, and GBP/CAD spreads sit wider than the dollar majors. Given how sharply this pair moved in the last session, checking the live quote before entering is not optional.

How often is the GBP to CAD rate updated?

Hourly refresh from ECB data, and the ECB publishes once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. Canadian markets run several hours behind Europe, so a late move in Toronto or New York will not appear until the following day’s fixing. Nothing is published at weekends or on ECB holidays.

How We Calculate This Exchange Rate

The rate shown comes from European Central Bank reference data via the Frankfurter API, cached for one hour. Reference rates are mid-market, the midpoint between wholesale bid and offer, and no retail customer is offered them. Banks, brokers, bureaux and transfer specialists each apply a margin. That is the point of publishing the midpoint: it gives you something to measure their quote against. Informational, not financial advice. The ECB frames them as averages for information, not rates you can transact at.

Important Risk Note

Forex trading involves risk and may not be suitable for every trader. Exchange rates can move quickly during periods of high volatility, economic news, and central bank announcements. As the 24 August session on this pair showed, a quiet month is no guarantee of a quiet day. Always use proper risk management before entering any trade.
