Topstep Review 2026: Is It a Good Prop Firm for UK Traders?

Topstep is a futures firm, not a forex firm, and that is the first thing to know. It has paid traders from Chicago since 2012, publishes its own pass rates, and is the only firm in this cluster with a genuine path from simulated to live capital. We read every rule article, priced the subscription model month by month, and worked out where a forex trader fits. Independent, no affiliate deal.

Quick verdict

Topstep review: quick verdict

7.7out of 10

Topstep is the most durable and most transparent firm we have reviewed, and the least useful to a forex trader who wants to keep trading forex. A $50,000 Trading Combine costs $49 a month on the standard path, has one rule (do not hit the trailing Maximum Loss Limit of $2,000), two objectives (a $3,000 target with your best day at or below 55 percent of it), no time limit, and a free Reset credit every renewal. Pass it and you move to an Express Funded Account, then, if you are in the top fraction of a percent, to a Live Funded Account trading real capital through Topstep's own brokerage. The firm reports $1.4 billion paid and, unusually, tells you that 16.8 percent of Combines were completed and 33.3 percent of participants were paid in 2025.

The catch for our readers is the product. Topstep trades CME futures only: no CFDs, no MetaTrader, no 1:100 leverage, and currencies come as 6E and 6B contracts with exchange margins and a 3:10 PM Chicago close on the Express account. Express payouts are capped per request at $2,000 to $6,000, the subscription keeps billing while you learn, and the Trustpilot score is a middling 3.6 with 19 percent one-star. If you are a futures trader or willing to become one, this is the best-run firm on this list. If you want to trade EURUSD on MT5 with our signals, it is the wrong tool, and we score it accordingly.

The rules

Topstep Trading Combine rules explained

Topstep describes its Combine as "one rule and two objectives", and that is a fair summary. Everything is in dollars, not percentages, because the products are futures contracts. Figures from the Trading Combine parameters, Maximum Loss Limit and consistency articles.

AccountProfit targetMaximum Loss LimitBest day cap (55%)Max contractsOptional daily loss limit

6%

Profit target

$3,000 on $50,000 is 6 percent, the same ratio at every size. No time limit and no minimum days beyond the two the consistency rule implies.

4% trailing

Maximum loss rule

The only hard rule. Trails your end-of-day balance up, never down, and locks at the starting balance. Watched in real time on open P&L; touch it and the account is liquidated.

55%

Consistency target

Your best day divided by total profit must be 55 percent or less when you hit the target. If not, the target rises: best day divided by 0.55 becomes the new number to reach.

0 daily limit

Daily drawdown rule

None unless you add one. A Daily Loss Limit chosen at checkout is fixed, carries into the funded account, doubles your payout caps, and is a forced break rather than a breach.

Trading day: 5:00 PM to 3:10 PM Central the next day, and the best day locks at 3:10 PM. Products: CME Group equity index, currency, energy, metal and agricultural futures and their micros; a micro counts as a tenth of a mini for position limits. Automation: allowed, at your own risk, with trade copiers permitted across your own accounts. Resets: put the account back to day one at the price of a month, limited to two per account per day, with one credit issued free at each renewal. Passing closes the Combine and cancels that subscription automatically.

Drawdown examples and the three steps

The staircase: Combine, Express, Live, and the firm's own odds on each step

Topstep is the only firm on this list that tells you how many people make it up each step. Here are its 2025 figures beside the rules for each stage, then what a $50K Combine actually costs across a realistic number of months.

1

Trading Combine

16.8% of Combines completed in 2025

Simulated, monthly subscription. Hit the target with your best day at or below 55 percent of it and never touch the Maximum Loss Limit. 51.8 percent of participants earned funding at some point in the year, because people take more than one Combine.

2

Express Funded Account

33.3% of participants paid in 2025

Still simulated. Your balance starts at $0 and the loss limit at minus $2,000, $3,000 or $4,500, locking at $0. Payouts capped per request, positions flat by 3:10 PM Central, 90/10 split. Lose it before your first payout and Back2Funded reactivation costs $599 to $829.

3

Live Funded Account

0.71% of Express traders called up

Real capital through Topstep's brokerage, by invitation on performance. You start with 20 percent of the balance available, unlock the rest in 25 percent increments, have no payout cap, and after 30 winning days can withdraw up to 100 percent once a day.

$50,000 Trading Combine, standard path, three months
Month 1 subscription$49
Month 2 subscription (1 free Reset credit issued)$49
Month 3 subscription$49
Activation fee on passing$149
Maximum Loss Limit you must never touch$2,000
Profit target (best day under $1,650)$3,000
Cost to reach a funded account in month 3$296

How to read the ledger

Three months at $49 plus the $149 activation fee is $296, close to what FTMO or FXIFY charge once for a $100,000 account, but for half the buying power and with the clock still running if month three goes badly. The No Activation Fee path at $95 a month reaches the same place for $285 over three months and is cheaper only if you pass in two. Nobody on this list makes you do that arithmetic; Topstep does.

On the drawdown side, $2,000 on $50,000 is 4 percent, tighter than most forex firms' 10 percent, and it trails, so a $1,500 winning day followed by a $1,500 losing day leaves you $500 closer to the limit than when you started. Add the optional $1,000 Daily Loss Limit and you cannot lose the account in one session, and your Express payout caps double. Run the numbers in our drawdown calculator, size contracts with the position size calculator, and check the 55 percent rule in the consistency calculator.

Pricing

Topstep fees and account sizes

Topstep is a subscription, not a one-time fee. Prices in US dollars from the firm's pricing article on 23 September 2026, excluding VAT, which is added at checkout for UK buyers. Promo codes apply to the first month only.

AccountStandard path (monthly)Activation fee on passingNo Activation Fee path (monthly)ResetBack2Funded reactivation
$50K$49$149$95$49 / $95$599
$100K$99$149$149$99 / $149$699
$150K$199$149$229$199 / $229$829

What the fee buys, and does not

A simulated Trading Combine that renews every 30 days until you pass or cancel, Level 1 market data included, a Practice Account, and one Reset credit added to your bank at each renewal. Level 2 depth-of-market data is $38 a month extra. Commissions are deducted from your balance per trade. Passing cancels the subscription automatically; other Combines you hold keep billing. Refunds are available within 28 days only if the account has never been traded. Adding a Daily Loss Limit at checkout earns a small recurring discount on the No Activation Fee path.

Paying and getting paid from the UK

Cards only (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover), in your own name, with VAT calculated at checkout. Payouts to the UK go via Wise in one to three business days with no Topstep fee, minimum $125; wire transfers cost $30 and take five to ten days. Payout requests are accepted during CME hours, Sunday 5 PM to Friday 5 PM Central.

UK trader notes

Can UK traders use Topstep?

Yes, at every stage. Topstep's eligibility article lists countries that can earn an Express Funded Account but not a Live one; the UK is not among them, so a UK trader can go all the way to live capital. No US citizenship is required, the minimum age is 18, and Wise is the named payout route for the UK.

Two things are different from the forex firms on this list. First, the product is US futures, so nothing about the FCA's retail CFD rules (PS19/18) is relevant either way, and the simulated stages are not regulated activity. Second, the Live Funded Account is a real arrangement with a US futures brokerage in Topstep's group, not a UK-regulated one, so it does not appear on the FCA Register and UK compensation schemes do not apply. Trading hours are Chicago hours: the Express day ends at 3:10 PM Central, which is 9:10 PM in London in summer, and the session opens at 5 PM Central. Read the FCA's note on high-risk investments, and treat payouts as self-employed income for HMRC; Topstep publishes its own tax notes for funded traders, written for the US.

Best for

Who is Topstep best for?

Futures traders, or forex traders willing to learn currency futures, who value a firm that has been paying for over a decade and offers a real route to live capital.

  • Index and currency futures day traders who are flat by the close anyway
  • Traders who want published odds and a simple, dollar-denominated rulebook
  • Traders aiming for live capital rather than a bigger simulated account
  • Beginners in futures who will use the Daily Loss Limit and Practice Account
Not for you if

Who should avoid Topstep?

Avoid it if you want to keep trading spot forex on MetaTrader; there is no version of that here. Avoid it if you hold swing positions overnight in the funded stage, because the Express account must be flat by 3:10 PM Central. Avoid the subscription if you expect to take several months to pass, and avoid it if capped payouts of $2,000 to $6,000 per request would frustrate you before you reach Live.

Challenge difficulty rating

How hard is the Topstep Trading Combine?

Moderate

Reaching the target

6 percent with no time limit is fair. The 55 percent consistency target means it takes at least two days and punishes one big session.

Moderate

Staying inside the rules

One hard rule, but it is a tight 4 percent trailing limit watched on open P&L. The firm says 63 percent of lost accounts go in a single day.

Moderate

Getting paid

Five winning days and a capped request in Express; uncapped and eventually daily in Live. Reliable, but the caps slow the early months.

Signals fit

Using The Forex Complex signals on a Topstep account

Our free Telegram signals are spot forex ideas with an entry, a stop loss and staged targets. On Topstep the idea survives and the instrument does not, so treat our calls as market context and translate deliberately if you execute.

  • Translate the pair: a long EURUSD idea becomes a long 6E or M6E futures contract; a long USDJPY idea becomes a short 6J. Get the direction right before anything else.
  • Convert the stop to dollars: a 30-pip stop on one M6E micro is about $37.50; on one 6E mini about $375. Size so that a full stop is a small fraction of the $2,000 Maximum Loss Limit.
  • Mind the clock: our swing ideas often run days; the Express account must be flat by 3:10 PM Central. Use them intraday or wait for Live.
  • Spread your days: the 55 percent consistency target in the Combine and the 40 percent path in Express both reward small, repeated wins over one big signal day.

What our trading team thinks of Topstep

Wesley, Founder and CEO of The Forex Complex

"Topstep is the firm I would point my dad to, and the one I would not point most of our members to. It has been paying people since before half these firms existed, it publishes its pass rates, and there is a real live account at the top of the stairs. But it is futures. If you have spent two years learning to trade EURUSD on MetaTrader, Topstep asks you to learn a new instrument, new hours and a new margin system before it tests your edge. Some of our traders have made that switch and love it. Most should look at FTMO or The5ers and keep the skill they already have."

How we review

How we score prop firms

The methodology

Every firm is scored out of 10 on nine criteria: forex trader suitability, challenge fairness, cost transparency, payout reliability, rule clarity, platform support, UK accessibility, risk management fit and support quality. The overall score is the average. Topstep's low forex suitability score reflects its futures-only product, not its quality; on the other eight criteria it is among the strongest firms we have reviewed. We read the firm's own help centre, rules pages and published statistics, review the Trustpilot profile and its complaint themes, and re-verify on the date shown at the top. We hold no affiliate or referral relationship with Topstep or any firm reviewed here.

FAQs

Topstep FAQs

Is Topstep legit?

Yes. Topstep has operated from Chicago since 2012, is one of the oldest firms in the industry, reports more than $1.4 billion paid to traders and 7,000 traders paid a week, and runs its own futures brokerage and platform. It is unusual in publishing its numbers: in 2025, 16.8 percent of Trading Combines were completed, 51.8 percent of participants earned funding and 33.3 percent were paid. Its Trustpilot score is a middling 3.6 from 14,830 reviews, with 19 percent one-star, mostly about the subscription model and rule breaches.

Does Topstep pay out?

Yes, and its payout record is the strongest in this cluster: $1.4 billion all time and around 7,000 traders paid weekly by its own account. Express Funded payouts are capped per request at 50 percent of your balance up to $2,000 to $6,000 depending on size and path; Live Funded payouts have no cap and, after 30 winning days, can be taken daily. UK traders are paid through Wise in one to three business days with no Topstep fee. The 90/10 split applies from the first dollar for traders who joined after 12 January 2026.

Is Topstep good for beginners?

For a beginner in futures, it is one of the better places to learn: the rules are simple and published, the Maximum Loss Limit is the only hard rule, there is no time limit, an optional Daily Loss Limit protects you from yourself, and the firm gives you a free Reset credit every month. For a beginner in forex, no: Topstep has no CFD accounts, no MetaTrader, and currencies are traded as CME futures contracts with different sizing, hours and margins. The monthly subscription also punishes slow learners more than a one-time fee does.

Can I trade forex with Topstep?

Only as currency futures. Topstep is a futures firm trading CME Group products, so euro, pound, yen and other currencies are available as standardised futures contracts such as 6E and 6B and their micro versions, not as spot forex or CFD pairs. There is no MetaTrader, no 1:100 leverage and no swap-free option; you trade on TopstepX, Tradovate or NinjaTrader with exchange margins and a 3:10 PM Central close for the Express Funded Account.

What are the Topstep Trading Combine rules?

One rule and two objectives. Do not let your balance hit the Maximum Loss Limit: $2,000 on the $50K, $3,000 on the $100K, $4,500 on the $150K, trailing on end-of-day balance until it locks at the starting balance. Reach the profit target: $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000. Meet the consistency target: your best day must be no more than 55 percent of the profit target, or the target rises. Maximum 5, 10 or 15 contracts. No minimum days beyond the two the consistency rule implies, and no time limit; the subscription simply renews monthly until you pass or cancel.

How does the Topstep Maximum Loss Limit work?

It is a trailing floor. A $50K Combine starts with a balance of $50,000 and a limit of $48,000. If you close the day at $50,500 the limit rises to $48,500; if you then fall back to $50,000 it stays at $48,500. It updates at the end of each day but is monitored in real time on unrealised profit and loss, so an open position that touches it liquidates the account immediately. Once the limit reaches $50,000 it locks there. In the Express Funded Account the balance starts at $0 and the limit at minus $2,000, locking at $0.

How much does Topstep cost?

The Trading Combine is a monthly subscription. Standard path: $49 a month for $50K, $99 for $100K, $199 for $150K, plus a one-time $149 activation fee when you pass. No Activation Fee path: $95, $149 or $229 a month with nothing to pay on passing. Resets cost the same as a month and you receive one free Reset credit at each renewal. Level 2 market data is $38 a month. Prices exclude VAT for UK buyers. Lose an Express Funded Account before your first payout and reactivating costs $599 to $829.

How do Topstep payouts work?

In the Express Funded Account you pick a path when you activate. Standard: five winning days of $150 or more, then request up to 50 percent of your balance capped at $2,000, $3,000 or $5,000 by size. Consistency: three trading days with your best day under 40 percent of profit, caps $3,000, $4,000 or $6,000. Adding a Daily Loss Limit at Combine checkout doubles the caps. Minimum payout $125, 90/10 split, paid during CME hours. In the Live Funded Account there is no cap, and after 30 winning days you can withdraw up to 100 percent daily.

Is Topstep available in the UK?

Yes, fully. UK traders can take the Trading Combine, earn an Express Funded Account and be called up to a Live Funded Account; some other countries are limited to the Express stage. Payouts to the UK go through Wise in one to three business days with no Topstep fee. The simulated stages are not FCA-regulated activity, and the Live Funded Account is a US futures arrangement through Topstep's own brokerage, so UK retail protections do not apply.

Topstep vs Apex Trader Funding: which is better?

Both are US futures firms. Topstep is older, publishes its pass and payout statistics, has a path to a genuinely live account, and uses a monthly subscription with no evaluation time limit. Apex sells one-time 30-day evaluations at heavy discounts, passes you in as little as one day, pays 100 percent of Performance Account profits with a $500 minimum, but caps each account at six payouts and closes it, and its accounts stay simulated. Choose Topstep for durability and the live path; choose Apex for speed and price if you are comfortable with simulated accounts that expire.

Can The Forex Complex signals be used for Topstep?

Only with translation. Our signals are spot forex ideas with pips-based stops; on Topstep you would express a EURUSD idea as a 6E or M6E futures contract, convert the stop into ticks and dollars against the Maximum Loss Limit, and respect the 3:10 PM Central close on the Express Funded Account. The directional idea carries over; the sizing, hours and instrument do not. Most of our members trading Topstep use the signals for market context rather than direct execution. No signal service can guarantee you will pass or be paid.

Risk disclaimer: Prop firm evaluations involve fees and trading on simulated accounts; futures trading carries a high level of risk, and most retail traders lose money. Nothing on this page is financial, investment or tax advice, and no signal service, including ours, can guarantee that you will pass an evaluation or receive a payout. Topstep changes its programs, rules and prices; rules and prices here were verified against the firm's own help centre and rules pages on 23 September 2026. The firm's own pages take precedence. The Forex Complex has no affiliate or referral relationship with Topstep.
