The Swiss franc is one of only a handful of currencies worth more than the US dollar, and this pair records that fact continuously. The converter above draws its rate from European Central Bank reference data and recalculates the moment you type.

Because USD/CHF prints below 1.00, a dollar amount always converts into a smaller franc figure, while francs convert into a larger dollar figure. Both directions display together so the asymmetry is visible rather than something you have to remember.

USD to CHF Exchange Rate Today

1 USD = 0.8190 CHF and 1 CHF = 1.2210 USD at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. That means 100 US dollars converts to 81.90 Swiss francs, and 100 Swiss francs converts to 122.10 US dollars.

The US dollar is trading in the upper part of its recent range against the Swiss franc. The pair sits above its 30 day average of 0.8091 and the 15 September high of 0.8182.

These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

USD/CHF Historical Exchange Rate

The franc has been gaining. USD/CHF has fallen 1.92 percent over 30 days, from 0.82004 down to 0.80426, and it recorded 0.79899 on 20 August, briefly dipping below the 80 centime mark. The month’s ceiling was 0.82004 on 29 July, giving a span of 2.63 percent.

Across 2026 the pair has ranged from 0.76703 to 0.82004. Over the full ECB record it has covered enormous ground: a high of 1.8284 on 26 October 2000, when a dollar bought more than one and four fifths francs, and a low of 0.72743 on 10 August 2011.

One date deserves separate mention. On 15 January 2015 USD/CHF fell from 1.0200 to 0.87803 in a single session, a drop of 13.92 percent. That was the day the Swiss National Bank abandoned its euro floor without warning. It remains the largest one-day move in any pair covered on this site, by a factor of six, and it is the reason experienced traders treat central bank pegs with suspicion.

USD/CHF 24-Hour Change

A 0.11 percent slip from 0.80515, less than half an average day for this pair. Quiet, and consistent with a market still digesting the week’s dollar recovery.

USD/CHF 7-Day Change

Up 0.60 percent from 0.79946, measured from just above the monthly low. The dollar has spent the week recovering the 20 August dip.

USD/CHF 30-Day Change

Down 1.92 percent from 0.82004, trading beneath the 30 day average of 0.80840. Franc strength has been consistent rather than sudden. Cross-referencing our GBP/CHF page, sterling has gained on the franc over a similar period, which suggests the driver here is a softer dollar rather than a broad flight into Swiss assets.

What Affects the USD to CHF Exchange Rate?

Two safe havens facing each other. That is the unusual feature of USD/CHF: both the dollar and the franc attract money during crises, so the pair often measures which of the two the market trusts more on a given day rather than any straightforward risk signal.

  • Relative haven demand. In a US-centred shock, money runs to the franc and USD/CHF falls. In a European or global shock, the dollar frequently wins and the pair rises. The direction depends on where the trouble originates.
  • Swiss National Bank policy. The SNB has run negative rates and has intervened in currency markets more aggressively than any other developed central bank. Its tolerance for franc strength is a live variable, not a constant.
  • Federal Reserve policy. The rate gap between the Fed and the SNB is usually wide, and changes to it move this pair directly.
  • Swiss inflation and current account. Persistently low Swiss inflation and a large external surplus create a structural upward pull on the franc that has operated for decades.
  • Euro area conditions. The franc is managed with a close eye on EUR/CHF, so eurozone stress transmits into this pair indirectly.
  • Gold. The franc retains a loose association with gold in market behaviour, and the two often strengthen together during monetary anxiety.

USD/CHF Market Context for Traders

Sometimes described as the anti-euro, USD/CHF frequently trades as a mirror of EUR/USD, and traders who hold both often discover they are running the same position twice. Liquidity is good, spreads are competitive, and the pair behaves predictably for long stretches. The risk is not day-to-day volatility. It is the tail.

Current USD/CHF Trend

Downward, with the franc in control despite a firmer dollar week. The pair has lost 1.92 percent in a month, trades below its 30 day average of 0.80840, and touched 0.79899 on 20 August. It sits 4.9 percent above the 2026 low of 0.76703, so there is room below before the year’s floor comes into view.

USD/CHF Volatility Snapshot

A 0.27 percent average day over the past 30, with a 1.38 percent maximum session. Placed against the other safe-haven pairs on this site, USD/CHF sits in the middle of the group.

Safe-haven pair 30 day range Average daily move
USD/JPY 4.47% 0.37%
GBP/JPY 3.36% 0.34%
USD/CHF 2.63% 0.27%
GBP/CHF 1.08% 0.17%

The 30 day numbers understate what this pair is capable of, and the January 2015 record proves it. A 13.92 percent gap in one session would have destroyed any account carrying leverage through it, and stop orders provided no protection because the price simply was not there. Nothing in the recent data warns of that. Size accordingly and use our position size calculator and risk of ruin calculator before committing capital, not after.

Rates tell you where the market is. They say nothing about whether a franc that has appreciated for a month is due a pause or set to continue. Our free forex signals address that gap.

The Forex Complex Team Insights

Our standing caution on this pair concerns correlation rather than direction. USD/CHF tracks EUR/USD inversely with unusual fidelity, so a trader long the franc against the dollar and short the euro against the dollar is frequently holding one position wearing two labels, with double the exposure they intended. Check your book for that overlap before adding here. Then set your risk with the 2015 gap in mind, because the recent 30 day statistics on this page describe a calm that has not always held.

How to Convert US Dollars to Swiss Francs

  1. Put the dollar amount into the upper input.
  2. Check CHF is set as the target, or use swap to reverse the pair.
  3. The live rate appears beneath, quoted as francs per dollar.
  4. Review the 30 day section. A 1.92 percent monthly shift means the timing of a large conversion is not trivial.
  5. Trading rather than transferring? Read the rate alongside current sentiment and open signals.

Coming from the Swiss side instead, enter francs in the lower input and the dollar total resolves live. That is the route most people arriving at this page actually need.

USD to CHF FAQs

How much is 1 USD in CHF today?

A dollar converts to 0.8190 Swiss francs on the ECB fixing of 16 September 2026. The tool above re-reads that feed hourly.

How much is $100 USD to CHF?

81.90 francs at the reference rate. A bank, card issuer or bureau will hand over less, and on a Swiss card terminal offering to bill you in dollars instead, expect a margin of 3 to 6 percent on top.

Why is CHF so strong against USD?

Three durable reasons and one immediate one. Switzerland runs a persistent current account surplus, inflation there has been consistently lower than in the US, and the franc is a first-choice haven during financial stress, all of which create standing demand. Immediately, USD/CHF is down 1.92 percent over 30 days, so the franc has been gaining recently as well.

Why is CHF falling against USD?

This question and the one above both appear in Google results for this pair and they pull in opposite directions. The data gives a split answer: over the past month USD/CHF has declined 1.92 percent, which means the franc has appreciated, but over the past week the dollar has recovered 0.60 percent. The monthly trend favours the franc; the last few sessions have leaned the other way.

How has CHF to USD changed this week?

The franc has given back roughly 0.60 percent against the dollar over seven days. In USD/CHF terms the pair moved from 0.79946 up to 0.80426. Put in franc terms, 1 CHF now buys 1.2210 dollars against about 1.2508 a week ago.

Is the Swiss franc worth more than the US dollar?

Yes. One franc buys 1.2210 dollars at the current fixing, making the franc one of very few currencies trading at a premium to the dollar. It has not always been so: back in October 2000 a single dollar bought 1.8284 francs.

Why does the USD to CHF exchange rate change?

Both currencies float and trade continuously. The principal drivers are the interest rate gap between the Federal Reserve and the Swiss National Bank, relative demand for haven assets, and Swiss economic fundamentals. Because both currencies are havens, this pair often reflects which of the two the market currently prefers rather than the level of risk itself.

Can I use this USD/CHF rate for forex trading?

As a reference, not a quote. The ECB publishes a single mid-market fixing per working day; live trading happens between a bid and an ask. USD/CHF spreads are usually tight but widen materially around SNB communications, and this is the one pair on this site with a documented history of gapping straight through stop orders. Take your price from your platform.

How often is the USD to CHF rate updated?

Hourly from ECB data, with the ECB itself fixing once per working day around 16:00 Central European Time. Switzerland shares that time zone, so unlike the Asian and Pacific pairs on this site the fixing is calculated while Swiss markets are still open, which makes it a closer reflection of live pricing here than elsewhere.

How We Calculate This Exchange Rate

Figures come from European Central Bank reference rates, retrieved via the Frankfurter API and cached for an hour. A reference rate is a mid-market number sitting between wholesale bid and offer. It is not available to retail customers and is not meant to be. Its usefulness is comparative: convert your amount here, set the result beside whatever a bank, broker or bureau quoted you, and the difference is what the transaction actually costs. Provided as information only, not as financial advice. The ECB describes its reference rates as informational averages, not dealing quotes.

Important Risk Note

Currency trading carries risk and is unsuitable for some investors. Rates react sharply to economic data and central bank decisions. This pair carries a specific and documented hazard: on 15 January 2015 the Swiss National Bank withdrew its euro floor and USD/CHF moved 13.92 percent in one session, with stop orders filling far from their trigger levels or not filling at all. Leverage magnified those losses without limit. Decide your maximum exposure before you enter a position here.
