Of every pair on this site, this is the only one pairing a reserve currency with an emerging market one, and the numbers show it. A single pound buys close to twenty two rand, so sterling figures expand dramatically in this direction and shrink to small change coming back. The converter above prices it from latest European Central Bank data.
This is also the UK’s busiest remittance corridor outside Europe, which is why the reverse table below runs up to R100,000 rather than stopping at the usual ten thousand.
1 GBP = 21.9149 ZAR and 1 ZAR = 0.0456 GBP at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 October 2026. That means 100 pounds converts to 2,191.49 South African rand, and 100 South African rand converts to 4.56 pounds.
Sterling is trading in the upper part of its recent range against the rand. The pair sits above its 30 day average of 21.8370 and the 2 October high of 22.0900.
These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

Sterling amounts in rand at 1 GBP = 21.91 ZAR. Note how quickly the right-hand column climbs: a modest pound figure becomes a five or six digit rand figure.

Sterling has had the better month. GBP/ZAR has risen 0.11 percent since 16 September, from 21.890 to 21.915, with the month’s extremes at 22.090 on 2 October and 21.593 on 25 September. A falling number here means the rand is gaining. Measured as a 30 day change in sterling’s favour, this pair ranks ninth of the 13 pairs on this site.
Across 2026 the pair has moved between 21.448 and 22.868. The record high of 25.242, set on 11 April 2025, is the strongest sterling has ever been against the rand in ECB records, and the latest fixing of 21.915 sits beneath it.
The long arc runs the other way entirely. On 7 July 1999 a pound bought 9.4021 rand. It now buys 21.915, meaning sterling purchases far more rand than it did at the start of the ECB series. Few currency relationships in this set have shifted so far in one direction.
30 days: 21.890 to 21.915 (+0.11%). Low 21.593 on 25 September, high 22.090 on 2 October.
90 days: 22.182 to 21.915 (-1.20%). Low 21.593 on 25 September, high 22.451 on 24 July.
1 year: 23.250 to 21.915 (-5.74%). Low 21.448 on 25 February, high 23.347 on 17 October.
| Period | Change | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | -0.017 | -0.08% |
| 7 days | +0.058 | +0.27% |
| 30 days | +0.025 | +0.11% |
Down 0.08 percent, from 21.932 to 21.915. On a pair whose average day runs 0.37 percent, that is the scale to judge the session by.
Up 0.27 percent from 21.857 on 9 October. The week’s range ran from 21.850 to 21.932.
Up 0.11 percent from 21.890, and 0.36 percent above the 30 day average of 21.837. Among the eight sterling crosses this pair ranks sixth for 30 day change counted in sterling’s favour; the nearer that rank is to eight, the more the rand has outperformed the other counter currencies. Emerging market currencies typically rally when global risk appetite improves and the dollar softens, and the AUD/USD and NZD/USD pages, down 2.43 and down 1.71 percent over the same window, show whether that backdrop currently applies.
The rand is the most heavily traded emerging market currency in the world, and fund managers use it as a liquid proxy for emerging market risk generally. That means GBP/ZAR frequently moves on sentiment towards emerging markets as an asset class, entirely independently of anything happening in South Africa or the UK.
If the base and quote convention on a pair quoted above 20 is unfamiliar, our explainer on forex pairs and how they work covers it.
Two things separate this pair from every other one on the site. It carries a materially wider spread than the developed market crosses, because the rand is an emerging market currency and dealers price that risk in. And it moves further in a single session than anything else here. That combination punishes casual position sizing and rewards traders who treat it as a distinct instrument rather than just another cross.
Up, with sterling in control. A 0.11 percent monthly rise, trading above the 30 day average of 21.837, 2.1 percent above the 2026 low of 21.448 and 4.3 percent below the 2026 high of 22.868. The past week added 0.27 percent.
An average daily move of 0.37 percent, with a maximum single session of 0.89 percent on 2 October inside the current window. The figure that defines this pair rarely sits inside any given month: in July 2026 GBP/ZAR moved 2.28 percent in a single day, and sessions like that arrive without warning on an emerging market cross.
| Pair | Largest single session | Average daily move |
|---|---|---|
| USD/JPY | 1.41% | 0.33% |
| GBP/JPY | 1.17% | 0.33% |
| NZD/USD | 1.13% | 0.33% |
| USD/CHF | 1.03% | 0.33% |
| GBP/ZAR | 0.89% | 0.37% |
Read that table carefully. Inside the current window GBP/ZAR ranks eighth of the 13 pairs on this site for its largest single session and first for average daily movement. Whatever those ranks say this month, the July 2026 session of 2.28 percent, briefly the most violent day of any pair we track, shows what the pair is capable of once such a day has rolled out of the statistics. Emerging market currencies produce exactly that shape: long quiet stretches interrupted by fast repricing on political or fiscal news, which a 30 day average is structurally bad at warning you about. Our position size calculator and risk of ruin calculator are worth running before you commit here, and the wider spread should feature in that arithmetic.

A rate tells you where the rand sits today. It cannot tell you whether a month of appreciation on an emerging market currency is a trend or a setup for a violent reversal, which on this pair is a live question. Our free forex signals address it.

Most people reaching this page are sending money, not trading, and the advice differs accordingly. For transfers, the spread matters more than the timing on a pair this wide: a provider quoting 3 percent off mid-market costs you more on a R100,000 transfer than a fortnight of ordinary rate movement would. Compare quotes against the figure on this page before worrying about the day you send. For traders, the reverse applies, and the point to internalise is the 2.28 percent session logged in July 2026. That is what emerging market exposure means in practice.
Starting from rand instead, type into the lower field and the sterling figure resolves live. Given the corridor this page serves, that is often the direction people need.

One pound converts to 21.91 rand on the ECB fixing of 16 October 2026. The converter above re-reads that feed hourly.
R100 comes to 4.56 pounds at the reference rate. For a sense of scale, R500 is 22.82 pounds and R1,000 is 45.63 pounds. Transfer providers and bureaux apply a margin on top, so expect to receive less than these figures.
R10,000 converts to 456.31 pounds. Larger amounts scale directly: R50,000 is 2,281.55 pounds and R100,000 is 4,563.10 pounds. On sums this size the provider’s margin matters considerably: a 3 percent spread takes 3 pounds of every 100 received.
Against sterling, not over the past month. GBP/ZAR has risen 0.11 percent over 30 days, which by convention means the rand has weakened. The pair traded between 21.593 on 25 September and 22.090 on 2 October and sits above its 30 day average of 21.837. Emerging market currencies tend to move with global risk appetite and against the dollar, so a rand move is rarely a purely South African story.
Exchange rates cannot be forecast reliably, and this pair is a poor candidate for trying. Its direction turns on global risk appetite, precious metal prices and South African fiscal news, any of which can shift without warning. What the record shows is range: sterling bought 9.4021 rand in July 1999 and 25.242 at the April 2025 peak. Follow the pair through our live forex signals rather than a target.
Sterling buys more than twice the rand it did in July 1999: 21.915 against 9.4021. The drivers are structural rather than recent: persistently higher South African inflation than in the UK, which erodes purchasing power year after year, alongside episodes of fiscal strain, credit rating downgrades, electricity supply constraints on mining output, and the general tendency of emerging market currencies to weaken against reserve currencies over long horizons.
Both currencies trade freely and continuously. The rand is the most liquid emerging market currency, so it responds to global risk sentiment as much as to domestic events, alongside platinum and gold prices, South African Reserve Bank policy, and UK rate expectations on the sterling side.
As a reference, not a dealing price. The ECB publishes one mid-market fixing per working day. Live trading runs between a bid and an ask, and on GBP/ZAR that spread is materially wider than on any developed market pair covered here, because dealers price emerging market risk into every quote. It widens further around South African budget statements and rating reviews. Always take your price from the platform.
Hourly from ECB data, with the ECB fixing once per working day at approximately 16:00 Central European Time. South Africa sits one or two hours ahead of Central European Time depending on the season, so the fixing is calculated while Johannesburg is still trading, making it a reasonably current reflection for this pair.
All rates here originate from European Central Bank reference data, retrieved through the Frankfurter API and cached for one hour. These are mid-market figures, sitting between wholesale bid and offer, and no retail customer is offered them. On this corridor that distinction carries real weight. Remittance providers, banks and bureaux each build in a margin, and because the sums sent between the UK and South Africa are frequently large, the gap between their quote and the number on this page can amount to a great deal. Convert here, compare, and you will see exactly what a transfer costs. Information only, not financial advice. The ECB classes them as informational averages, not rates offered in any transaction.

Currency trading carries risk and is not suitable for everyone. Rates react sharply to economic data and central bank decisions. GBP/ZAR carries emerging market risk on top of ordinary currency risk: it produced a 2.28 percent single session move in July 2026, at the time the largest of any pair on this site, and South African fiscal or political news can reprice it faster than positions can be adjusted. Spreads are wider here than on developed market pairs and widen further under stress. Fix your risk limits before entering.
