Two North American currencies, one time zone band, and a rate that tracks the price of crude more closely than any other major pair. The converter above prices USD/CAD from the latest European Central Bank reference rate as you type.
Unusually for this set, both legs of this pair trade through the same sessions. There is no overnight gap between a New York close and a Toronto open, which makes the daily reference rate a closer match to reality here than on the Asian or Pacific crosses.
1 USD = 1.3920 CAD and 1 CAD = 0.7184 USD at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 15 September 2026. That means 100 US dollars converts to 139.20 Canadian dollars, and 100 Canadian dollars converts to 71.84 US dollars.
The US dollar is trading in the upper part of its recent range against the Canadian dollar. The pair sits above its 30 day average of 1.3865 and the 7 August high of 1.4010.
These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

The Canadian dollar has had a strong month. USD/CAD peaked at 1.4105 on 29 July 2026 and bottomed at 1.3740 on 21 August, a 2.66 percent span, and it now sits at 1.3854. Falling in this pair means the loonie is gaining, and it has gained 1.78 percent over 30 days.
The 2026 band runs from 1.3524 to 1.4240. Zoom out further and the record is instructive: USD/CAD reached 1.6173 on 21 January 2002, and fell to 0.90708 on 7 November 2007, a period when one Canadian dollar bought more than one US dollar. Parity is not a theoretical level on this pair. It has been breached.
| Period | Change | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | +0.0033 | +0.24% |
| 7 days | +0.0115 | +0.83% |
| 30 days | +0.0045 | +0.32% |
A 0.11 percent dip in the latest session, from 1.3869 to 1.3854. Half this pair’s typical daily movement, and no disturbance to the monthly picture.
Up 0.83 percent on the week, measured from the monthly floor of 1.3740 set on 21 August. A loonie month, but a greenback week.
Down 1.78 percent from 1.4105, and trading below the 30 day average of 1.3929. Sustained loonie strength, and the clearest directional signal on the page. Note the sterling cross-check: the pound has also gained on the Canadian dollar this month, which says the loonie’s run here is mostly a story about a soft US dollar.
No major pair is more closely wedded to a single commodity. Canada exports roughly four million barrels of crude a day, the vast majority of it south across the border, and USD/CAD prices that relationship in real time.

The loonie is the quiet major. Spreads are tight, liquidity is reliable, and the pair rarely produces the violent single-session moves that characterise the yen crosses. What it does instead is grind, sometimes for weeks, in service of an oil trend. Traders who want drama look elsewhere. Traders who want a clean macro thesis with a tradeable proxy tend to keep coming back.
Lower, on Canadian dollar strength. The pair has shed 1.78 percent in 30 days, trades under its 30 day average of 1.3929, and its recent low of 1.3740 is the weakest USD/CAD has printed since the year’s floor at 1.3524. Momentum sits with the loonie, though the past week has clawed back most of a percent.
A 0.22 percent average daily move and a 0.79 percent worst session over the past 30 days. Among the four dollar-quoted majors on this site, USD/CAD is the calmest.
| Dollar pair | 30 day range | Average daily move |
|---|---|---|
| USD/JPY | 4.47% | 0.37% |
| AUD/USD | 3.66% | 0.30% |
| GBP/USD | 2.76% | 0.23% |
| USD/CAD | 2.66% | 0.22% |
Lower volatility cuts both ways. It means smaller adverse excursions, and it also means the same profit target needs either more time or more size. Anyone carrying position sizing habits over from USD/JPY will find this pair frustratingly slow; anyone arriving from GBP/EUR will find it lively. Our position size calculator and forex pip calculator take the guesswork out of that adjustment. Expect volatility to spike around Bank of Canada announcements, US non-farm payrolls, and weekly crude inventory data.

| Level | Rate | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 high | 1.4240 | The year’s ceiling, now 2.8 percent above spot. |
| 30 day high | 1.4105 | 29 July 2026. Where the current decline started. |
| 30 day average | 1.3929 | Spot sits below it. Reclaiming this would be the first sign the loonie run is stalling. |
| 30 day low | 1.3740 | 21 August 2026. The monthly floor. |
| 2026 low | 1.3524 | The floor for the year, 2.4 percent below spot. |
Knowing the rate is one thing. Knowing whether a 1.78 percent monthly slide is a trend worth joining or a move worth fading is another. Our free forex signals exist for the second question.

Treat this converter as a starting point rather than a conclusion. The recurring mistake we see on USD/CAD is traders analysing it as a currency pair when it behaves, much of the time, as a leveraged oil position with a central bank overlay. If your view on the loonie is not ultimately a view on crude, it is worth asking what it is a view on. Pair this page with live signals, chart work, and risk limits you set before you enter.
Reverse the exercise by typing a Canadian figure into the lower field. The US dollar equivalent recalculates on every keystroke.

1.3920 Canadian dollars per US dollar, per the ECB fixing dated 15 September 2026. The tool above re-reads that feed every hour.
100 US dollars comes to 139.20 Canadian at the reference rate. Expect less in practice: a bank wire, a card payment or a bureau will each price in a margin, and on a sum this size a 3 percent spread costs you roughly 4 Canadian dollars.
0.7184 US dollars. Ten Canadian dollars buys 7.18 US, and 1,000 buys 718.39.
Yes, and it has been for a month. USD/CAD has dropped 1.78 percent over 30 days, which by convention means the Canadian dollar is appreciating. The pair now trades beneath its 30 day average of 1.3929 after touching 1.3740 on 21 August. Worth qualifying though: the loonie has slipped against sterling across the same period, so this is better read as broad US dollar softness than as a Canada-specific story.
Sterling buys 1.8769 Canadian dollars at the current ECB fixing. That cross has its own page with conversion tables and market context: see our GBP to CAD converter.
It has. USD/CAD fell to 0.90708 on 7 November 2007, the lowest reading in ECB records, meaning one Canadian dollar fetched roughly 1.10 US at the peak of the commodity boom. The opposite extreme came on 21 January 2002 at 1.6173. Today’s 1.3854 sits between the two, closer to the weak-loonie end.
Continuous two-way trading in a deep market, driven principally by crude oil prices and the policy gap between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada. Because the two economies are so tightly integrated, US data frequently moves the Canadian dollar as forcefully as Canadian data does.
For orientation, yes. For execution, no. What you see here is a mid-market reference fixed once each working day by the ECB. Live dealing happens between a bid and an ask, and although USD/CAD spreads are narrow by cross standards, they widen around Bank of Canada decisions and oil inventory releases. Pull a live quote from your platform before committing.
Every 60 minutes from the ECB feed, though the ECB publishes only once per working day at approximately 16:00 Central European Time. One quirk favours this pair: 16:00 CET falls mid-morning in New York and Toronto, so the fixing lands while both markets are open, which is not true of any Asian or Pacific cross on this site.
Source: European Central Bank reference rates, fetched via the Frankfurter API and cached for sixty minutes. What that gives you is the mid-market number, sitting exactly between wholesale bid and offer. It is a reference, not an offer. Every commercial provider prices around it and keeps the difference, so the practical value of the mid-market rate is comparison: run your amount here, put it beside the quote you were given, and the gap is the fee. Informational content, not financial advice. Per the ECB, these are averages published for information, not executable rates.

Trading currencies carries risk and will not suit everyone. Rates can move quickly on economic releases and central bank decisions. USD/CAD carries a specific exposure worth naming: an oil shock can reprice this pair in minutes for reasons that have nothing to do with either central bank. Set your risk parameters before you open a position, not after.
