An MT5 demo account is a MetaTrader 5 practice account that uses virtual funds on a selected trading server. It lets you learn the platform, place orders, use charts and indicators, and test workflows without risking real money. Broker and server settings can differ, and demo results should not be treated as evidence of how the same strategy will perform on a live account.
What is an MT5 demo account?
A MetaTrader 5 demo account is a training account that lets you use MT5 with virtual rather than real money. MetaQuotes documents demo and real accounts as separate account types. Demo accounts can be opened without an investment, which means virtual gains are not withdrawable trading profit.
The interface can look very similar to a live MT5 account, but that visual similarity should not be confused with identical trading conditions. A demo is useful for learning the platform and rehearsing a process; it does not prove that live fills, costs or results will match the simulation.
How to open a demo account on MetaTrader 5
- Open MetaTrader 5 and choose the account-opening workflow from the File menu or Navigator.
- Search for the broker or company that hosts the demo server. MetaTrader 5 also allows a server address to be entered where supported.
- Select the relevant server and choose the option to open a demo account.
- Enter the requested registration information and choose from the account types and settings made available by that server.
- Select available parameters such as account type, virtual deposit, leverage and, where offered, hedging or netting mode.
- Complete registration and save the account login, password and exact server name. You need the correct server as well as the credentials to reconnect later.
On iPhone and Android, the workflow is similar: open account management, find the broker server, select Demo account and complete the available account parameters. MetaTrader’s current mobile documentation notes that server search results are broker-specific and recommends confirming the server name with the broker if needed.
Choosing the correct broker and demo server
Server selection is part of the account definition, not a cosmetic setting. The server can determine which symbols appear in Market Watch, which account types are offered, the deposit currency, leverage options and whether positions are handled using hedging or netting accounting.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Broker/company name | Prevents logging into the wrong environment | Exact broker name and demo server |
| Server name | Credentials are tied to a specific server | Spelling and server suffix |
| Account type | May change spreads, commission model or symbols | Demo account matches intended live type where possible |
| Virtual balance / currency | Affects margin practice and account reporting | Realistic practice settings, not a performance target |
| Leverage / position accounting | Changes margin mechanics and position handling | Server options; hedging vs netting where offered |
UK note
MT5 support is a platform fact, not a regulatory fact. If you later consider a live UK account, verify the exact legal entity and its current FCA status separately from the fact that the broker appears in MetaTrader 5.
Using an MT5 demo account on desktop and mobile
The same MT5 account can generally be used across supported clients when you enter the correct login, password and server. MetaTrader stores previously used accounts in the account manager, making it possible to switch between them without treating each device as a separate account.
| Area | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Account access | File/Navigator account actions | Accounts section in app settings |
| Connection details | Login, password, server | Login, password, server |
| Main workflow | Market Watch, charts, Toolbox, orders | Quotes, charts, trade and history views |
| Security | Protect the master password | Do not share the master password; use supported authentication controls |
What to practise in MT5 before trading live
- Add and organise instruments in Market Watch and inspect symbol specifications before placing orders.
- Practise market and pending orders, plus stop-loss and take-profit placement and modification.
- Use charts, timeframes, indicators and graphical objects without treating any indicator as predictive by itself.
- Watch the balance, equity, margin and free-margin fields so you understand how position changes affect the account display.
- Review trade history and record what happened instead of focusing only on virtual P/L.
- Keep a short practice log that records the displayed spread, the intended order, the actual simulated fill and any process mistake.
Illustrative practice sequence
With a hypothetical GBP 10,000 virtual balance, add EUR/USD to Market Watch, inspect its specification, open a chart, place a small practice market order, attach a stop loss and take profit, modify one level, close the position and record the displayed spread. Completing the sequence demonstrates interface familiarity, not expected profitability.
Can you use Expert Advisors on an MT5 demo account?
MetaTrader 5 supports Expert Advisors (EAs) and includes a Strategy Tester for historical testing. A demo account can be useful for checking that an EA is installed correctly, receives the expected permissions and behaves as intended in the selected broker/server environment.
Demo operation and backtests still have limits. Live spreads, latency, liquidity, slippage, rejected or partial fills and broker-specific execution rules can differ. An EA running correctly in a demo does not establish that it will produce the same live results or be profitable.
MT5 demo vs live account: what changes?
| Area | MT5 demo | MT5 live | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funds | Virtual | Real client funds | Real losses have financial consequences |
| Execution | Simulated by broker/server environment | Executable against live broker conditions | Fills can differ even on the same interface |
| Spread & liquidity | May resemble current pricing | Can widen or thin with market conditions | Displayed price does not guarantee the same fill |
| Slippage & latency | May be simplified or behave differently | Can affect realised entry and exit | Small execution differences can change results |
| Costs | May omit or simplify some costs | Commission, financing and conversion may apply | Total cost may be higher than demo suggests |
| Onboarding | No funded-client KYC in the same sense | Broker approval and verification are normally required | A demo login does not become a live account automatically |
| Behaviour | No real-money loss pressure | Real gains and losses can change decisions | Process discipline can deteriorate under stress |
How to change from demo to real account on MT5
You normally do not convert a demo balance or demo login directly into a funded MT5 account. A live account is usually opened or requested separately with the broker, after which you receive live account credentials and the relevant server details.
Choose a broker and verify the legal entity, live-account eligibility and regulatory status that would apply to you.
- Complete the broker’s live-account application and any identity or address verification it requires.
Review the live account type, fees, leverage and margin rules and symbol specifications rather than copying demo assumptions.
- Receive or locate the live MT5 login and server details from the broker.
- Add or log into the live account inside the same MT5 application using those separate credentials.
- Treat the first live sessions as a different execution environment; demo familiarity does not remove market, leverage or execution risk.
How to evaluate an MT5 demo account
The useful question is not which demo has the highest virtual balance or the most permissive leverage. A better comparison checks whether the practice environment is relevant to the live account you may later evaluate.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters | Source / date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broker/server relevance | Correct company, server and intended account type | Keeps practice tied to the actual environment | Official broker / MetaTrader docs |
| Expiry or inactivity rule | Whether the demo expires or can be recreated | Prevents losing a practice setup unexpectedly | Broker terms; date checked |
| Symbols | Whether intended forex pairs are available | Server symbol sets can differ | Server specification |
| Leverage settings | Available demo leverage and live comparison | Margin mechanics can otherwise be misleading | Broker/account terms |
| Desktop/mobile access | Whether the same login works on required devices | Supports consistent practice workflow | MetaTrader docs |
| Execution realism | What the broker says about demo pricing/fills | Current prices do not equal live-equivalent execution | Broker execution/demo disclosure |

Frequently asked questions
Can I create an MT5 demo account without depositing money?
Yes. MetaTrader 5 demo accounts use virtual funds and can be opened without funding a real-money account. Registration fields, server availability and expiry rules can still vary by broker or demo server.
Why can’t I find my broker in MetaTrader 5?
MetaTrader 5 requires you to select the correct broker or trading server. Search using the broker/company name and verify the exact server name with the broker if a similar-looking server appears or the expected one is missing.
Can I use the same MT5 demo account on phone and desktop?
Generally, yes, provided both clients support the account and you use the same login, password and server. Connection methods and any additional authentication requirements should be checked against current MetaTrader documentation and the broker’s server settings.
Do MT5 demo accounts expire?
There is no universal MT5 expiry rule. Demo duration, inactivity rules and recreation or reset options are set by the broker or server, so named examples should be checked from current broker terms.
Can I reset the virtual balance on an MT5 demo?
That depends on the broker/server. Some environments allow a reset, while others require a new demo account. Verify the current process for the specific server instead of assuming a standard MT5 rule.
Are MT5 demo prices the same as live prices?
A demo may use current broker price feeds, but that does not guarantee identical live spreads or fills. Live execution can differ because of liquidity, slippage, latency, costs and broker-specific order handling.
Can I use Expert Advisors on a MetaTrader 5 demo account?
Yes where the server and platform configuration permits. A demo can help confirm setup and behaviour, but demo results, Strategy Tester results and backtests do not guarantee the same live execution or profitability.
Is MT5 demo trading suitable for learning forex?
It can be useful for learning platform mechanics, order types, charting and a repeatable review process without risking real money. It cannot reproduce every live execution condition or the behavioural pressure of real losses.
