Traders call it the Aussie, and they watch it for reasons that have little to do with Australia. AUD/USD is the market’s cleanest read on global risk appetite, and the converter above prices it from the latest European Central Bank reference data.

One thing to notice before you start: this pair is quoted below 1.00, so an Australian dollar buys less than a US dollar and your converted figure will always be the smaller of the two. That inverts the habit built on most other pairs on this site.

AUD to USD Exchange Rate Today

1 AUD = 0.7132 USD and 1 USD = 1.4021 AUD at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. That means 100 Australian dollars converts to 71.32 US dollars, and 100 US dollars converts to 140.21 Australian dollars.

The Australian dollar is trading in the lower part of its recent range against the US dollar. The pair sits below its 30 day average of 0.7141 and the 9 September high of 0.7225.

These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

AUD/USD Historical Exchange Rate

This is the strongest 30 day performance of any pair on the site. AUD/USD has climbed 3.66 percent since 29 July, from 0.69403 to 0.71946, and the latest session is itself the monthly high. The floor was 0.69403 on 29 July, so the low sits at one end of the window and the high at the other, a 3.66 percent span.

The rally still has room before it meets resistance. The 2026 high stands at 0.72569 and the year opened its range at 0.66682, meaning the Aussie has recovered a long way from January but has not yet reclaimed its 2026 peak.

Longer term, the picture is humbling. AUD/USD touched 1.1054 on 1 August 2011, when one Australian dollar bought more than one US dollar during the mining investment boom. The record low is 0.48291, set on 2 April 2001. Today’s rate sits roughly midway between those poles.

AUD/USD 24-Hour Change

A gain of 0.06 percent, from 0.71903 to 0.71946, enough to print a fresh monthly high. Quiet, but still forward.

AUD/USD 7-Day Change

Up 0.37 percent from 0.71681, with the peak arriving in the latest session. The advance has slowed but not stopped.

AUD/USD 30-Day Change

Up 3.66 percent from 0.69403, the largest monthly gain of any pair covered on this site. The Australian dollar bottomed on 29 July and has risen almost continuously since, and it now trades well above its 30 day average of 0.7083. The kiwi moving in near lockstep, up 2.96 percent itself, says most of this is a broad antipodean bid, though not all of it.

What Affects the AUD to USD Exchange Rate?

The Aussie is a proxy trade. Buying it is, in practice, a bet on global growth, Chinese industrial demand and investor confidence. Selling it is the reverse. Domestic Australian data matters, but it rarely matters most.

  • Chinese demand. China absorbs the bulk of Australian iron ore. Chinese PMI readings, stimulus announcements and property sector news move the Aussie faster than anything published in Canberra.
  • Iron ore and coal prices. These two commodities dominate Australian export earnings, and the currency tracks them closely enough that the relationship is tradeable in its own right.
  • Risk appetite. AUD/USD is the FX market’s default risk gauge. Equities rally, the Aussie rallies. Volatility spikes, the Aussie sells off, usually before anything else does.
  • Reserve Bank of Australia policy. Rate decisions and the tone of the accompanying statement, particularly where they diverge from Federal Reserve expectations.
  • US dollar direction. As the quote currency, broad dollar moves show up here directly. A share of the last month’s 3.66 percent gain is dollar weakness rather than Aussie strength, though this time not all of it.
  • Rate differentials. When Australian yields sit above US yields the pair attracts carry flows. When that gap closes, those flows reverse.

AUD/USD Market Context for Traders

Liquidity here is excellent and spreads are among the tightest outside the euro and yen. The catch is that AUD/USD often moves before the news that explains it becomes public, because it is priced off expectations about China and global growth rather than off scheduled Australian releases. It also does most of its work during the Asian session, which is inconvenient for European desks.

Current AUD/USD Trend

Firmly higher. A 3.66 percent monthly gain, trading above the 30 day average of 0.7083, within 0.9 percent of the 2026 high at 0.72569, and printing its monthly peak in the latest session. The open question is how much is a durable repricing of Australian growth and how much the mirror image of a soft US dollar.

AUD/USD Volatility Snapshot

Averaging 0.30 percent a day with a 0.87 percent maximum session over 30 days. Set against the other commodity-linked currencies, the Aussie is the most active of the group by a clear margin.

Commodity currency pair 30 day range Average daily move
AUD/USD 3.66% 0.30%
USD/CAD 2.66% 0.22%
GBP/AUD 1.83% 0.23%
GBP/NZD 1.21% 0.27%
GBP/CAD 1.01% 0.17%

One consequence of the sub-parity quote deserves attention. A one pip move on AUD/USD is 0.0001, but because the pair trades near 0.715 rather than near 1.30, the cash value of that pip per lot differs from what a GBP/USD trader is used to. Position sizing carried over from cable will be wrong here. Run the numbers through our forex pip calculator and position size calculator rather than estimating.

The Forex Complex Team Insights

Read this rate as a sentiment indicator as much as a price. When AUD/USD is climbing steadily, as it has all month, that usually says something about global risk appetite that will eventually show up in other markets. The trap is mistaking a soft US dollar for genuine Australian strength, so check the Aussie against a non-dollar counterpart. This month the check cuts the other way: on our GBP/AUD data sterling has ceded 1.4 percent to the Aussie, which says part of this move is real Australian dollar strength rather than pure greenback softness. Use the converter with live signals, chart analysis and defined risk.

How to Convert Australian Dollars to US Dollars

  1. Type the Australian amount into the first box.
  2. Verify USD sits opposite, or hit the swap control to reverse direction.
  3. The live rate displays underneath, quoted as US dollars per Australian dollar.
  4. Read the 30 day panel above. A 3.66 percent monthly swing means the date you convert on carries real weight.
  5. Trading rather than transferring? Check current sentiment and open signals before you act.

Converting the other way is quicker still: enter US dollars in the lower box and watch the Australian total resolve as you type.

AUD to USD FAQs

How much is 1 AUD in USD today?

An Australian dollar is worth 0.7132 US dollars on the ECB fixing dated 16 September 2026. The converter re-reads that figure hourly.

How much is $100 AU in USD?

100 Australian dollars converts to 71.32 US dollars at the reference rate. Card issuers, banks and bureaux each add a margin, so the figure you actually receive will be lower, typically by 2 to 5 percent depending on the provider.

What is $1000 AUD in USD?

713.22 US dollars. Scaling up, 10,000 Australian dollars comes to 7,132.16 US, and scaling down, 50 Australian dollars is 35.66 US.

Is AUD getting stronger against USD?

Yes, and more than any pair we track. AUD/USD has risen 3.66 percent over 30 days, printing its monthly high of 0.71946 in the latest session, well above its 30 day average of 0.7083. And it is not purely US dollar weakness this time: the Aussie has also taken 1.4 percent off sterling across the same window.

Why is the AUD so weak compared to USD?

The premise fits the long run better than the present. Right now the Australian dollar is rallying. But at 0.7132 it sits well below the 1.1054 peak of August 2011, and that decline reflects genuine structural shifts: the end of the mining investment boom, softer Chinese construction demand, and a lengthy period during which Australian interest rates sat below American ones, removing the yield advantage that once drew capital in.

Has the Australian dollar ever been worth more than the US dollar?

Yes. AUD/USD peaked at 1.1054 on 1 August 2011, when one Australian dollar bought about 1.11 US dollars. The pair traded above parity for extended stretches between 2010 and 2013. Its weakest recorded point was 0.48291 on 2 April 2001.

Why does the AUD to USD exchange rate change?

Both currencies float freely and trade continuously. The main influences are Chinese economic data, iron ore and coal prices, global risk sentiment, and the yield gap between the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Federal Reserve. Because the Aussie functions as a risk proxy, it often moves on developments in markets far from Australia.

Can I use this AUD/USD rate for forex trading?

As a reference only. The ECB sets one mid-market rate per working day, whereas trading happens continuously between a bid and an ask. AUD/USD spreads are tight, but the pair is most active during Asian hours, long before the European fixing is calculated, so the published rate can trail live pricing by a full session. Always work from your broker’s quote.

How often is the AUD to USD rate updated?

The page refreshes from ECB data hourly, but the ECB produces just one fixing per working day at roughly 16:00 Central European Time. For this pair that timing is awkward: Sydney has been closed for hours by then, so a significant Asian session move will not appear in the reference rate until the following day.

How We Calculate This Exchange Rate

All figures originate from European Central Bank reference rates, collected through the Frankfurter API and held in cache for one hour. These are mid-market rates, positioned between wholesale buying and selling prices, and they are not obtainable by retail customers. Their value to you is as a yardstick. Take the amount you were quoted by a bank, a transfer service or a card provider, convert the same sum here, and the shortfall is the true cost of the transaction. This is published for information and is not financial advice. The ECB itself calls these information-only averages rather than market quotes.

Important Risk Note

Currency trading involves risk and is not appropriate for every investor. Prices can move sharply around data releases and central bank announcements. AUD/USD carries a particular characteristic worth understanding: as a risk barometer it tends to fall first and fastest when global sentiment deteriorates, often before the trigger is widely reported. Establish your risk limits before entering, not during.
