Convert USD to JPY

USD/JPY is the second most traded currency pair on earth, and the converter above prices it from the latest European Central Bank reference rate. Enter a dollar figure and the yen total appears as you type. Nothing to click, nothing to close.

The yen is quoted in the hundreds per dollar, so the two figures on screen sit two orders of magnitude apart. Both directions stay visible at once to make that easier to read, and the tables below cover each scale separately.

USD to JPY Exchange Rate Today

1 USD = 155.0500 JPY and 1 JPY = 0.0064 USD at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. That means 100 US dollars converts to 15,505 Japanese yen, and 100 Japanese yen converts to 0.64 US dollars.

The dollar is trading in the lower part of its recent range against the yen. The pair sits below its 30 day average of 157.6717 and the 1 September high of 160.1600.

These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

USD/JPY Historical Exchange Rate

The yen reached its weakest level on record against the dollar on 28 July 2026, when USD/JPY touched 163.91. That is the highest reading in European Central Bank data going back to 1999. It happened one month ago, on the very edge of the window this page reports on.

What followed was abrupt. The pair fell to 156.68 by 3 August, a drop of 4.4 percent in four sessions, and now trades at 159.68. The 30 day range of 4.47 percent is the widest of any pair in this set, and both extremes of it were set within a week of each other.

For scale, the other end of the historical record sits at 75.77, set on 28 October 2011. The dollar buys more than twice as many yen today as it did fifteen years ago.

Period Change Percentage
24 hours+0.05+0.03%
7 days+1.78+1.16%
30 days-4.18-2.63%

USD/JPY 24-Hour Change

The dollar added 0.18 percent against the yen in the last session, rising from 159.39 to 159.68. Set against an average daily move of 0.37 percent, that is an unremarkable day for this pair.

USD/JPY 7-Day Change

Over seven days the pair rose 0.62 percent from 158.70. After the violence of late July and early August, a firm but quiet week reads as consolidation with a dollar bid underneath.

USD/JPY 30-Day Change

Over 30 days USD/JPY fell 2.44 percent, down from 163.68. That is the largest 30 day decline of any pair covered on this site, and the window opens practically at the record high before collapsing 4.4 percent in four sessions. The yen has strengthened materially, from a record low base.

What Affects the USD to JPY Exchange Rate?

USD/JPY is fundamentally an interest rate story. The gap between what the Federal Reserve pays and what the Bank of Japan pays has driven this pair for two decades, and it is the reason the yen spent years as the world’s funding currency of choice.

  • The Fed to BoJ rate gap. This is the dominant variable. When US yields rise relative to Japanese ones, capital flows out of yen and USD/JPY climbs. Narrow the gap and the move reverses, often violently.
  • US Treasury yields. The pair tracks the 10 year Treasury yield more closely than almost any other currency pair tracks any bond. Traders watch the yield chart alongside the price chart.
  • Carry trade positioning. Borrowing cheaply in yen to buy higher yielding assets works until it does not. When those positions unwind, the yen is bought back en masse and USD/JPY can fall several percent in days.
  • Japanese intervention. Japan’s Ministry of Finance has repeatedly bought yen directly to slow its decline. Verbal warnings usually precede action, and the market prices those warnings.
  • Risk sentiment. The yen is a safe haven. Equity selloffs and geopolitical shocks push USD/JPY down independently of rate differentials.
  • US economic data. Non-farm payrolls, CPI and retail sales move Fed expectations, and Fed expectations move this pair faster than they move most others.

Our explainer on forex pairs and how they work covers quoting conventions, which are worth knowing on a pair where a single pip is the second decimal place rather than the fourth.

USD/JPY Market Context for Traders

This is a professional’s pair. Liquidity is enormous, spreads are among the tightest anywhere, and it trades meaningfully in all three sessions, with the Tokyo open often setting the tone. The flip side is that USD/JPY responds to macro inputs faster than retail traders can react to them, and its worst days are far worse than its average day suggests.

Current USD/JPY Trend

Down, sharply, from a record. The pair is 2.44 percent lower over 30 days and 2.6 percent below the all-time high of 163.91 set on 28 July. It trades just above its 30 day average of 159.22 and has recovered from the 3 August low of 156.68. The past week added 0.62 percent, a slow rebuild rather than a reversal signal.

USD/JPY Volatility Snapshot

Average daily movement over the past 30 days was 0.37 percent, and the largest single session move was 2.22 percent. That is six times the daily average, and the most extreme single-day reading of any pair in the current window. GBP/ZAR printed a wider 2.28 percent session in late July, but that day has since aged out of its 30 day statistics.

Pair 30 day range Average daily move Largest single day
USD/JPY 4.47% 0.37% 2.22%
NZD/USD 3.69% 0.37% 1.17%
AUD/USD 3.66% 0.30% 0.87%
GBP/JPY 3.36% 0.34% 1.86%
GBP/USD 2.76% 0.23% 0.75%
USD/CAD 2.66% 0.22% 0.79%
USD/CHF 2.63% 0.27% 1.38%
GBP/ZAR 2.61% 0.28% 0.83%
GBP/AUD 1.83% 0.23% 0.73%
GBP/NZD 1.21% 0.27% 0.55%
GBP/CHF 1.08% 0.17% 0.87%
GBP/CAD 1.01% 0.17% 0.64%
GBP/EUR 0.47% 0.09% 0.23%

The third column is the one that matters for risk. USD/JPY has the widest 30 day range and the most violent single session, and the gap between its average day and its worst day is the largest here. NZD/USD matches it on average daily movement, but has never produced a session like that 2.22 percent day. Both yen pairs sit near the top, which is not coincidence: carry unwinds hit the yen first and hardest. Size positions for the tail, not the average. Our position size calculator and forex pip calculator handle the yen convention, where a pip is 0.01 rather than 0.0001.

Key USD/JPY Levels to Watch

Zones taken from ECB reference data. Two of them are historical records, which is unusual and worth noting in itself.

Level Rate Why it matters
All-time high 163.91 Set on 28 July 2026, also the 2026 high. The ceiling, and only a month old.
30 day average 159.22 The pair has just reclaimed this after the August drop.
30 day low 156.68 Set on 3 August 2026, four sessions after the record high.
2026 low 152.63 The floor for the year so far, 4 percent below current levels.
All-time low 75.77 Set on 28 October 2011. Context for how far the yen has fallen.

The Forex Complex Team Insights

The USD/JPY rate gives a useful snapshot of the current exchange value, but traders should also review volatility, market sentiment, and upcoming economic events before making decisions. The specific hazard on this pair is asymmetry. It grinds higher slowly while the carry trade is working, then falls in a straight line when it stops. Anyone sizing a position off the 0.37 percent average daily move is not sized for the 2.22 percent day that arrived inside the same window. The Forex Complex team recommends using this converter together with live forex signals, technical analysis, and proper risk management.

How to Convert US Dollars to Japanese Yen

  1. Enter your dollar figure in the first field.
  2. Confirm JPY is the target currency, or press swap to reverse the pair.
  3. Read the live rate below the converter. It is quoted per dollar, so expect a number in the hundreds.
  4. Check the 30 day section above before acting. This pair has moved 4.47 percent in the past month, so the date of your conversion matters more than usual.
  5. For trading decisions, weigh the rate against current sentiment and live signals.

Starting from yen instead? Type into the second field and the dollar figure updates live. That is the faster route if you are working from a price or invoice seen in Japan.

USD to JPY FAQs

How much is 1 USD in JPY today?

One dollar buys 155.05 yen at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. The converter at the top of the page refreshes that hourly.

How much is 1,000,000 yen in US dollars?

One million yen converts to 6,449.53 US dollars at the current reference rate. For smaller reference points, 100,000 yen is 644.95 dollars and 10,000 yen, the largest banknote in circulation, is 64.50 dollars.

Why is JPY weakening now?

Over the longer arc it has been, and the reason is the interest rate gap. The Bank of Japan held rates near zero while the Federal Reserve raised aggressively, which made the yen the cheapest major currency to borrow and sell. That pressure drove USD/JPY to an all-time high of 163.91 on 28 July 2026. Over the past 30 days, though, the direction has reversed: the pair is down 2.44 percent and the yen has strengthened.

Why is USD JPY dropping?

Because the yen has been recovering from a record low. USD/JPY fell 4.4 percent in the four sessions after 28 July 2026, from 163.91 to 156.68, and remains 2.44 percent below where it stood a month ago. Moves of that speed on this pair typically reflect carry trade positions being closed, which forces buying of yen regardless of the underlying rate differential. Note that this question and the one above appear together in search results and point in opposite directions. Both are accurate over different timeframes.

What is the prediction for USD/JPY?

We do not publish price forecasts, and pairs that just set a record high and fell 4 percent in a week are exactly the ones where forecasts age worst. What can be said factually: the pair sits near its 30 day average of 159.22, above its 2026 low of 152.63, and its direction from here depends primarily on whether the Fed to BoJ rate gap widens or narrows. Follow it through our live forex signals rather than a target price.

Why does the USD to JPY exchange rate change?

USD/JPY moves continuously because both currencies trade in a deep, open global market. The primary driver is the interest rate differential between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, amplified by carry trade flows. Secondary drivers include US Treasury yields, global risk appetite, and the prospect of the Japanese Ministry of Finance intervening to support the yen.

Is the dollar stronger than the yen?

One dollar buys around 155 yen, but that ratio measures unit size, not economic strength. Japan never redenominated the yen after the post-war period, so its base unit stayed small. A more meaningful comparison is the trend: the dollar buys more than twice as many yen today as it did at the 2011 low of 75.77.

Can I use this USD/JPY rate for forex trading?

As a benchmark, yes. As a dealing price, no. The ECB publishes one mid-market fixing per working day; brokers quote a live bid and ask around it. USD/JPY spreads are among the tightest in the market, but the pair also gaps, and a fixing set at 16:00 Central European Time will not reflect an overnight move in Tokyo. Check your platform.

How often is the USD to JPY rate updated?

The converter pulls ECB data every hour, and the ECB itself fixes once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. That matters more on this pair than most: USD/JPY is most active during the Tokyo and New York sessions, both of which sit outside the European fixing window, so intraday moves can run well ahead of the published reference rate.

How We Calculate This Exchange Rate

Every figure here comes from European Central Bank reference rates, retrieved through the Frankfurter API and cached for an hour. Reference rates are mid-market, meaning the midpoint between wholesale bid and offer, and they are published once per working day. No one deals at exactly that number. On a pair as liquid as USD/JPY the gap between mid-market and a retail quote is small in percentage terms, but it is still there, and on a card payment or an airport exchange it can be several percent. Use this page as the benchmark to check any quote against. It is information, not financial advice. The ECB’s own framing: reference averages for information, not transaction prices.

Important Risk Note

Forex trading involves risk and may not be suitable for every trader. USD/JPY produced a 2.22 percent single session move within the past 30 days and reached an all-time high in the same window, so recent history on this pair is a live demonstration of how quickly conditions change. Carry trade unwinds can move it several percent with very little warning, and Japanese authorities have intervened directly in this market before. Always use proper risk management before entering any trade.
