The pound gained 0.12 percent against the New Zealand dollar in the last session, moving from 2.2820 to 2.2848. A modest continuation of the bounce off the 21 August low.
Over seven days GBP/NZD rose 0.17 percent, up from 2.2810. The week started on the monthly floor and has been a slow climb off it since.
Over 30 days GBP/NZD fell 0.73 percent, down from 2.3015. The pair trades below its 30 day average of 2.2927 and closer to the monthly low than the high. The New Zealand dollar has strengthened against sterling over the month, not weakened.
GBP/NZD moves on the policy gap between the Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and on global commodity demand. The New Zealand dollar is a commodity currency backed by a small, open economy, which makes it more sensitive to external shocks than most majors.
Our guide to forex pairs and how they work covers quoting conventions, which are worth understanding on a pair priced above 2.00.
GBP/NZD is a thin cross. Neither leg is a US dollar, and the New Zealand dollar is the smallest of the majors by turnover, so spreads are wider and liquidity drops away outside the London and Sydney overlaps. That combination produces a pair that moves in larger increments than its range suggests.
The New Zealand dollar has the upper hand. GBP/NZD is down 0.73 percent over 30 days, trades below its 30 day average of 2.2927, and set a monthly low of 2.2810 on 21 August. The bounce since then is small and has not reclaimed the average, so the month still reads as sterling weakness against the kiwi.
Average daily movement over the past 30 days was 0.27 percent, with the largest single session move at 0.55 percent. Among the sterling crosses that is second only to GBP/JPY, and it sits mid-table once the dollar pairs are included.
| Sterling cross | 30 day range | Average daily move |
|---|---|---|
| GBP/JPY | 3.36% | 0.34% |
| GBP/NZD | 1.21% | 0.27% |
| GBP/USD | 2.76% | 0.23% |
| GBP/AUD | 1.83% | 0.23% |
| GBP/CHF | 1.08% | 0.17% |
| GBP/CAD | 1.01% | 0.17% |
| GBP/EUR | 0.47% | 0.09% |
Read the two columns together and GBP/NZD stands out. Its 30 day range is middling for a sterling cross, yet only GBP/JPY moves more day to day. No other sterling pair packs that much daily movement into that narrow a band. In practice that means frequent reversals inside the range rather than clean direction, which punishes wide stops and rewards discipline. Our position size calculator and forex pip calculator are worth using here, since the pip value on a pair quoted above 2.00 differs from the dollar pairs most traders are used to.

| 2026 low | 2.2470 | The year’s floor, 1.7 percent below the current rate. |
Converter data tells you where the rate is. It does not tell you what to do with it, and on a thin cross that reverses often, that gap matters. Read how our free forex signals work, or join the group below.

The GBP/NZD rate gives a useful snapshot of the current exchange value, but traders should also review volatility, market sentiment, and upcoming economic events before making decisions. Two things catch people out on this pair. Liquidity thins outside the London and Sydney sessions, so stops can fill worse than expected. And because the pair is quoted above 2.00, a given pip move is worth less in pounds than the same pip move on a dollar pair, which distorts position sizing if you carry habits over from GBP/USD. The Forex Complex team recommends using this converter together with live forex signals, technical analysis, and proper risk management.

A pound buys 2.3351 New Zealand dollars at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026. The converter refreshes that hourly.
One pound buys 2.3351 New Zealand dollars at the current reference rate. Put the other way, 100 New Zealand dollars converts to 42.82 pounds. Banks, bureaux de change, and transfer providers apply their own margin, so the amount you actually receive will be lower.
It is not. Over the past 30 days the New Zealand dollar has strengthened against sterling, not weakened. GBP/NZD is down 0.73 percent over the month and set a 30 day low of 2.2810 on 21 August 2026. The pair has bounced 0.17 percent since, but it still trades below its 30 day average of 2.2927.
Against the pound it has not weakened this month, as the figures above show. Over a longer horizon the New Zealand dollar has been under pressure from softer dairy prices, slower Chinese and Australian demand, and a Reserve Bank of New Zealand easing cycle that narrowed the country’s rate advantage. Those forces are real, but they are not what the last 30 days of GBP/NZD data show.
Nobody can predict exchange rates reliably. Sterling’s direction against the New Zealand dollar depends mainly on whether the Bank of England or the Reserve Bank of New Zealand shifts policy first, and on global commodity demand. The pair currently sits below its 30 day average and 1.7 percent above its 2026 low, so recent momentum favours the kiwi. Follow the pair through our live forex signals rather than relying on forecasts.
For anyone converting pounds into New Zealand dollars, the current rate is worse than it was a month ago. GBP/NZD is down 0.73 percent over 30 days and sits below its 30 day average of 2.2927, well below the 2026 high of 2.3519. The Forex Complex does not give financial advice, and exchange rates can reverse quickly.
GBP/NZD changes constantly because both currencies trade in an open global market. The main drivers are the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, global dairy and commodity prices, and risk sentiment. New Zealand is a small open economy, so its currency reacts more sharply to external shocks than most majors.
Yes. At 2.3351, one pound buys more than two New Zealand dollars, so sterling has the higher nominal value. This does not mean the UK economy is stronger than New Zealand’s. Nominal exchange rates reflect historical convention and current market pricing, not relative economic strength.
Reference only. The ECB publishes one mid-market fixing per working day; brokers quote a spread around it. GBP/NZD carries some of the widest spreads of any sterling cross because turnover is thin, and those spreads widen further outside the London and Sydney overlap. Check the live quote, and check what time it is.
Hourly from ECB data, with the ECB fixing once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. New Zealand’s session opens and closes long before that, so the daily fixing reflects a market that shut hours earlier. No fixing at weekends or on ECB holidays.
The rate here derives from European Central Bank reference data via the Frankfurter API, cached for an hour. It is mid-market: the midpoint of wholesale bid and offer, which no retail customer is quoted. On large transfers the gap matters in absolute terms. A one percent margin on a NZ$100,000 transfer is roughly 437 pounds, which is why comparing a broker’s quote against the mid-market figure is worth the two minutes it takes. Informational, not financial advice. As the ECB notes, they are reference averages rather than actual transaction rates.

Forex trading involves risk and may not be suitable for every trader. Exchange rates can move quickly during periods of high volatility, economic news, and central bank announcements. GBP/NZD carries the additional risk of thin liquidity outside the London and Sydney sessions, which can widen spreads and worsen fills. Always use proper risk management before entering any trade.
