Convert GBP to JPY

Yen figures run large. One pound buys more than two hundred of them, so the converter above does the arithmetic and prices it off the latest European Central Bank reference rate. Enter sterling, read yen, instantly.

The pair shows both ways at once, which matters more here than on most pairs because the two directions look nothing alike. A modest sterling sum is a five-figure yen sum. The tables below cover both scales.

GBP to JPY Exchange Rate Today

1 GBP = 208.9906 JPY and 1 JPY = 0.0048 GBP at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 15 September 2026. That means 100 pounds converts to 20,899 Japanese yen, and 100 Japanese yen converts to 0.48 pounds.

Sterling is trading in the lower part of its recent range against the yen. The pair sits below its 30 day average of 213.6725 and the 25 August high of 217.0700.

These figures reflect the latest ECB reference rate, which the European Central Bank publishes once each working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. This page checks for a new fixing every hour, and the converter above uses the same rate.

GBP/JPY Historical Exchange Rate

GBP/JPY has covered more ground this month than any other major sterling pair. It traded as low as 211.05 on 3 August 2026 and as high as 218.15 on 30 July 2026, a range of 3.36 percent. The 30 day average sits at 215.25.

7 days+0.00+0.00%
30 days-6.25-2.90%

GBP/JPY 24-Hour Change

The pound gained 0.19 percent against the yen in the last session, moving from 216.48 to 216.89. A below-average day for a pair that moves 0.34 percent on a typical one.

GBP/JPY 7-Day Change

Over seven days GBP/JPY rose 0.08 percent, up from 216.71. The recovery from the 3 August low at 211.05 has settled into consolidation rather than extension.

GBP/JPY 30-Day Change

Over 30 days GBP/JPY fell 0.29 percent, down from 217.52. The net change is small, but the path was not. The pair fell more than 3 percent to its 3 August low, then recovered nearly all of it. That round trip, not the headline number, is the story for this pair.

What Affects the GBP to JPY Exchange Rate?

GBP/JPY moves on the policy gap between the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan, and on global risk appetite. The yen is a safe haven currency, which means this pair often reacts to events that have nothing to do with either the UK or Japan.

  • Bank of Japan policy. The BoJ held rates near zero far longer than other major central banks. Any shift in that stance moves the yen hard, and GBP/JPY with it.
  • Bank of England policy. Rate decisions, MPC vote splits, and forward guidance move sterling directly. A wide UK to Japan rate gap supports the pair.
  • Global risk sentiment. The yen strengthens when markets are fearful and weakens when they are confident. Equity selloffs anywhere in the world tend to push GBP/JPY down.
  • Carry trade flows. Because Japanese rates have been low for decades, traders borrow in yen to buy higher yielding currencies. When those positions unwind, the yen spikes and GBP/JPY drops sharply.
  • UK macro data. Inflation, wage growth and GDP set Bank of England expectations. On this pair, though, UK data is frequently overwhelmed by whatever global risk sentiment is doing to the yen.
  • Japanese intervention. Japan’s Ministry of Finance has intervened directly in currency markets to support the yen. The threat alone can move the pair.

GBP/JPY Market Context for Traders

GBP/JPY is the most volatile of the major sterling crosses, which is why traders nickname it the dragon. It combines a news-driven currency in the pound with a safe haven currency in the yen, and the result is a pair that trends hard and reverses hard. It is not a beginner’s pair.

Current GBP/JPY Trend

The pair is recovering. GBP/JPY is down just 0.29 percent over 30 days after a flat week, and it trades above its 30 day average of 215.25. The August low of 211.05 held, and the pair has retraced most of that drop.

GBP/JPY Volatility Snapshot

Average daily movement over the past 30 days was 0.34 percent, with the largest single session move at 1.86 percent. That makes GBP/JPY the widest ranging of the three pairs in this comparison.

Pair 30 day range Average daily move
GBP/JPY 3.36% 0.34%
GBP/USD 2.76% 0.23%
GBP/EUR 0.47% 0.09%

Wider ranges mean larger moves for and against you on the same position size. Volatility rises further around Bank of Japan and Bank of England announcements, UK inflation releases, and any broad risk-off move in global equities. Our position size calculator and forex pip calculator help you size trades against a fixed risk amount, which matters more on this pair than on any other sterling cross.

Key GBP/JPY Levels to Watch

Zones observed in 30 days of ECB reference data. Descriptive only, and on a pair this quick they date fast.

30 day average 215.25 The pair is trading just above this. A common reference for whether the recovery holds.
30 day low 211.05 Set on 3 August 2026. The floor of the recent selloff.

The Forex Complex Team Insights

The GBP/JPY rate gives a useful snapshot of the current exchange value, but traders should also review volatility, market sentiment, and upcoming economic events before making decisions. This pair punishes oversized positions. A move that would be a normal week on GBP/EUR can happen here in a single session, and carry trade unwinds can gap the price with very little warning. The Forex Complex team recommends using this converter together with live forex signals, technical analysis, and proper risk management.

How to Convert British Pounds to Japanese Yen

  1. Enter your sterling amount in the first field.
  2. Make sure JPY is the target currency, or use swap to reverse the pair.
  3. Check the live rate under the converter. It is quoted per pound, so the number runs in the hundreds.
  4. Look at the 24 hour, 7 day and 30 day sections. On the most volatile sterling cross, recent movement is worth more than a snapshot.
  5. For trading decisions, weigh the rate against current sentiment and live signals.

Coming from the other side, enter your yen figure in the second field. Sterling recalculates as you type, which is the quicker route if you are working from prices seen in Japan.

GBP to JPY FAQs

How much is 1 GBP in JPY today?

One pound converts to 208.99 yen at the European Central Bank reference rate published on 15 September 2026. The converter above refreshes hourly.

What is the pound to yen rate today?

The pound to yen rate is 208.99. In the other direction, 1,000 yen is worth 4.78 pounds. Both figures come from ECB reference data published on working days.

Is the pound strong against the yen?

By historical standards, yes. GBP/JPY has ranged between 117.29 and 250.61 in European Central Bank records going back to 1999. At 208.99 the pound sits in the upper part of that 27 year range, though below the 2026 high of 219.14 set in July.

What is considered a large bill in Japan?

The 10,000 yen note is the largest banknote in general circulation, worth about 47.85 pounds at the current rate. The 5,000 yen note is worth roughly 23.92 pounds and the 1,000 yen note about 4.78 pounds. Japan remains more cash-friendly than the UK, though card acceptance in cities is now widespread.

How much is 50,000 yen in pounds?

50,000 yen converts to 239.25 pounds at the current reference rate. For reference, 200,000 yen is 956.98 pounds and 100,000 yen is 478.49 pounds. Whether any of those amounts covers a given trip depends entirely on your travel style, so treat the conversion as the fact and the budgeting as your own call.

Why does the GBP to JPY exchange rate change?

GBP/JPY changes constantly because both currencies trade in an open global market. The main drivers are the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan, UK economic data, and global risk sentiment. The yen is a safe haven, so this pair often falls during market stress even when nothing has changed in the UK or Japan.

Is the pound stronger than the yen?

One pound buys around 209 yen, but that ratio says nothing about economic strength. The yen simply has a much smaller unit value, a legacy of Japan never redenominating its currency after the post-war period. Comparing nominal exchange rates between currencies tells you about convention, not about the health of either economy.

Can I use this GBP/JPY rate for forex trading?

Use it as a benchmark, not a quote. ECB reference rates are mid-market and fixed once per working day. Brokers add a spread, and on GBP/JPY that spread is materially wider than on cable or GBP/EUR because the cross carries more risk to warehouse. Check the live bid and ask before you trade.

How often is the GBP to JPY rate updated?

Hourly from ECB data, and the ECB publishes once per working day at around 16:00 Central European Time. Worth knowing on this pair specifically: the yen trades actively through the Asian session, hours before that European fixing, so the reference rate can lag intraday reality more than it does on European crosses.

How We Calculate This Exchange Rate

Figures on this page come from European Central Bank reference rates via the Frankfurter API, cached for an hour. These are mid-market rates, set midway between wholesale bid and offer. They are a benchmark, not a price anyone transacts at. Airport bureaux de change, card issuers applying their own conversion, and brokers quoting a spread will all give you something different. Compare their number against this one and the shortfall is the cost. This is information, not financial advice. The ECB describes them as reference averages, not executable market prices.

Important Risk Note

Forex trading involves risk and may not be suitable for every trader. GBP/JPY is among the most volatile major pairs, and exchange rates can move quickly during periods of high volatility, economic news, and central bank announcements. Carry trade unwinds can move this pair several percent in a single session. Always use proper risk management before entering any trade.
