The pound was flat against the dollar in the last session, edging up 0.01 percent from 1.3582 to 1.3583. An unusually quiet day for cable, which averages 0.23 percent.
Over seven days GBP/USD fell 0.53 percent, down from 1.3656. That reference point was also the monthly high, so the week reads as a drift back from the top of the range rather than a break lower.
Over 30 days GBP/USD gained 2.21 percent, up from 1.3289. That is the clearest signal on this page. The pound has recovered the ground it lost in late July and is trading in the upper half of its monthly range.
GBP/USD moves on the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve, plus UK and US economic data. Because both are major reserve currencies, the pair reacts quickly to policy news from either side.

GBP/USD, known as cable, is one of the most heavily traded pairs in the forex market. It carries tight spreads, deep liquidity through the London and New York sessions, and enough daily movement to matter for both intraday and swing traders.
The 30 day trend is up. GBP/USD has gained 2.21 percent over the month and trades above its 30 day average of 1.3520. The short term picture is flatter: the pair has drifted 0.53 percent back from the 21 August high of 1.3656 and was unchanged in the latest session.
Average daily movement over the past 30 days was 0.23 percent, with the largest single session move at 0.75 percent. That places GBP/USD in the moderate volatility band. It moves more than EUR/USD and considerably less than GBP/JPY.
Volatility rises sharply around Bank of England and Federal Reserve announcements, UK inflation releases, and US non-farm payrolls. Position sizing matters most on those days. Our position size calculator and forex pip calculator help you size trades against a fixed risk amount.

| 30 day low | 1.3289 | Set on 29 July 2026. The floor of the current range. |

The GBP/USD rate gives a useful snapshot of the current exchange value, but traders should also review volatility, market sentiment, and upcoming economic events before making decisions. Cable is a news-driven pair, and a single Bank of England or Federal Reserve statement can undo a week of steady movement. The Forex Complex team recommends using this converter together with live forex signals, technical analysis, and proper risk management.

At the European Central Bank reference rate published on 16 September 2026, one pound buys 1.3456 dollars. That figure refreshes hourly in the converter above.
The pound to dollar rate is 1.3456. In the other direction, 1 US dollar is worth 0.7432 pounds. Both figures come from ECB reference data.
100 US dollars converts to 74.32 British pounds at the current reference rate of 1 USD = 0.7432 GBP. Banks, card providers, and money transfer services will apply their own margin, so the amount you actually receive will be lower.
GBP/USD changes constantly because both currencies trade in an open global market. The main drivers are the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve, UK and US inflation data, and global risk sentiment. Cable is quoted around the clock on weekdays, so the rate moves through every trading session.
Yes. At 1.3456, one pound buys more than one dollar, so sterling has the higher nominal value. This does not mean the UK economy is stronger than the US economy. Nominal exchange rates reflect historical convention and current market pricing, not relative economic strength.
GBP/USD is currently in the upper half of its 30 day range, up 2.21 percent over the month and above its 30 day average of 1.3520. For anyone converting pounds into dollars, that is a more favourable rate than most of the past month. The Forex Complex does not give financial advice, and exchange rates can reverse quickly.
Nobody can predict exchange rates reliably. Sterling’s direction against the dollar depends mainly on how Bank of England and Federal Reserve rate expectations shift over the coming months. Follow the pair through our live forex signals rather than relying on forecasts.
Treat it as a benchmark rather than a dealable price. ECB reference rates are mid-market and fixed once a working day. Your broker quotes a bid and an ask around that midpoint, and cable carries the tightest spreads of any sterling pair, often well under a pip on a retail account. Check the live quote before you commit.
Hourly, from ECB data. The ECB itself publishes one reference set per working day, fixed at roughly 16:00 Central European Time. Weekends and ECB holidays produce no new fixing, so the rate you see on a Sunday is Friday’s.
Every figure on this page traces back to European Central Bank reference rates, pulled through the Frankfurter API and held in cache for an hour. Reference rates are mid-market: the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting in the wholesale market. Nobody transacts at exactly that number. Banks, brokers, card issuers and money transfer firms all build a margin around it, which is precisely what makes the midpoint useful. It is the yardstick you measure their quote against. It is not financial advice. The ECB publishes these as informational averages, not prices anyone deals at.
