What is a pip in forex?

A pip (short for “percentage in point” or “price interest point”) is the smallest standard price movement a currency pair can make in the forex market. For most pairs, one pip equals 0.0001 (the fourth decimal place). For JPY-quoted pairs like USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.01 (the second decimal place).

Pips are how traders measure profit, loss, and risk on a trade. When EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that is a 1-pip move. Most modern brokers also quote a fractional pip called a pipette, which is one-tenth of a pip (the fifth decimal place on most pairs). Pipettes give more precise pricing but the standard unit for sizing trades is still the pip.

The value of one pip in your account currency depends on three things: the currency pair you are trading, the size of your position, and your account currency. That is why a forex pip calculator exists.

How does the forex pip calculator work?

The Forex Complex pip calculator converts the pip movement of any instrument into a monetary value in your account currency, automatically. It uses this formula:

Pip Value = (One Pip in Decimal × Trade Size) ÷ Exchange Rate

For a standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD with the pair quoted at 1.0850:

Pip Value = (0.0001 × 100,000) ÷ 1.0850 = €9.22 ≈ $10 per pip

For USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD), the pip value is fixed at roughly $10 per pip per standard lot, $1 per mini-lot, and $0.10 per micro-lot. For cross pairs and JPY pairs, the value shifts with the exchange rate, which is why automating the calculation matters.

The calculator pulls live exchange rates and handles the conversion to your account currency (GBP, USD, EUR, and so on) so the output is the exact pounds, dollars, or euros you make or lose per pip.

How to calculate pips in forex

Use The Forex Complex calculator in four steps:

  1. Select your account currency. Choose the currency your trading account is denominated in (GBP, USD, EUR, JPY, and so on). Pip value will be returned in this currency.
  2. Choose the instrument. Select from major and minor forex pairs, gold (XAU/USD), silver, indices (US30, NAS100, GER40), or crypto pairs.
  3. Enter your trade size. Use lots (1.0 = standard lot, 0.1 = mini-lot, 0.01 = micro-lot) or units.
  4. Read the output. The calculator returns your exact pip value in your account currency.

Combine this with the position size calculator to work out the right lot size for your stop-loss distance, then use this calculator to confirm exactly how much each pip is worth before you click buy or sell.

Pip value reference table

Approximate pip values per standard lot (100,000 units) for a GBP-denominated account at recent exchange rates:

Pair One pip Pip value per standard lot Pip value per mini-lot Pip value per micro-lot
EUR/USD 0.0001 £7.90 £0.79 £0.08
GBP/USD 0.0001 £7.90 £0.79 £0.08
AUD/USD 0.0001 £7.90 £0.79 £0.08
USD/JPY 0.01 £5.10 £0.51 £0.05
EUR/GBP 0.0001 £10.00 £1.00 £0.10
XAU/USD (Gold) 0.01 £0.79 £0.08 £0.01
NAS100 1.00 £0.79 per point £0.08 per point £0.01 per point

Values shift with the live exchange rate. Always confirm with the calculator before entering a trade.

Pip calculator for gold, indices, and major pairs

The same calculator works across asset classes, but the pip definition and contract size differ. Here is how it works for the most-traded non-major instruments.

Gold (XAU/USD) pip value

For a gold pip calculator, one pip on XAU/USD is 0.01 (gold is quoted with two decimal places). On a 1.00 standard lot of gold (100 ounces), a 1-pip move equals $1. A 100-pip move on the same lot equals $100. Because gold typically moves 200 to 500 pips in a session, even modest position sizes carry significant pip exposure. The calculator handles the XAU/USD pip value conversion automatically.

Indices (NAS100, US30) pip value

For indices like NAS100 and US30, the “pip” is usually called a point and equals 1.00 of index movement. On most CFD brokers, 1 lot of US30 means $1 per point. A 100-point move equals $100 per lot. The exact point value depends on the broker contract specification, so check your broker or use the calculator with your broker’s contract size selected.

GBP/USD and other major pairs

For GBP/USD, EUR/USD, AUD/USD, and other USD-quoted majors, one pip equals 0.0001 and pip value is roughly $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini-lot, and $0.10 per micro-lot. For GBP accounts trading these pairs, the calculator converts those USD pip values to GBP at the live rate.

Why pip values are important in forex trading

Pip value is the bridge between your trade idea and your actual money at risk. Without knowing the pip value, you cannot calculate position size, set a sensible stop-loss, or measure whether a trade is worth taking.

Three reasons pip value matters on every trade:

  • Position sizing. You cannot size a trade properly without knowing how much each pip costs you. The position size calculator needs accurate pip values to return the right lot size.
  • Risk-to-reward calculation. A 20-pip stop with a 60-pip target is a 1:3 ratio in pips, but the cash value of that ratio depends on pip value. On GBP/JPY a 1:3 ratio looks very different to GBP/USD in pounds at risk.
  • Currency exposure. Pip values change with the exchange rate on cross pairs and JPY pairs. A trade that risks £100 today might risk £105 next month at the same lot size if the rate moves against you. Recalculating before each trade protects you from drift.

The risk of ruin calculator shows mathematically why accurate pip values matter: small miscalculations compound across hundreds of trades into the difference between a growing account and a blown one.

Common mistakes traders make when calculating pip value

Five mistakes that distort pip value and cost real money:

  1. Confusing pips and pipettes. A pip on EUR/USD is 0.0001 (the fourth decimal). A pipette is 0.00001 (the fifth decimal). Reading a 10-pipette move as a 10-pip move overstates the move by 10x. Most modern broker platforms display 5 decimals; always check whether you are reading pips or pipettes.
  2. Assuming all pairs have the same pip value. EUR/USD and EUR/GBP look similar but have different pip values for a GBP account, because the quote currency is different. Always run the calculator per pair.
  3. Forgetting the account currency conversion. Pip value charts published in USD do not apply directly to a GBP or EUR account. The calculator handles the FX conversion using live rates so you do not have to do it manually.
  4. Using yesterday’s pip value. Pip values on cross pairs and JPY pairs move with the exchange rate. A pip value calculated last week may be 1-2% off today. Recalculate before every trade.
  5. Treating gold and indices like forex pairs. XAU/USD is quoted with two decimals, not four. NAS100 moves in whole-number points. Applying a forex pip formula to gold or indices gives you a wildly wrong number. Select the correct instrument in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 pip worth?

On most USD-quoted forex pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD), 1 pip is worth approximately $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini-lot, and $0.10 per micro-lot. The exact value in your account currency depends on the pair and the live exchange rate. Use The Forex Complex pip calculator to find the precise value for your specific trade.

How much is 10 pips worth in forex?

On a standard lot of EUR/USD, 10 pips is worth approximately $100 (10 × $10 per pip). On a mini-lot it is $10, and on a micro-lot it is $1. For non-USD pairs and JPY pairs, the value differs and depends on the live exchange rate. The calculator gives you the exact figure in your account currency.

What is the difference between pips and pipettes?

A pip is the standard unit of price movement (the fourth decimal place on most pairs, second decimal for JPY pairs). A pipette is one-tenth of a pip (the fifth decimal on most pairs, third decimal for JPY pairs). Pipettes allow brokers to quote tighter spreads, but position sizing and stop-losses are still calculated in pips, not pipettes.

How do I calculate pip value for gold (XAU/USD)?

One pip on XAU/USD is 0.01 (gold is quoted with two decimal places). On a 1.00 standard lot (100 ounces), 1 pip equals $1. A 100-pip move on a 1.00 lot equals $100. For other lot sizes, multiply proportionally. The Forex Complex calculator handles gold pip value automatically when you select XAU/USD.

Why does pip value change with account currency?

Pip value is calculated in the quote currency of the pair, then converted to your account currency at the live exchange rate. A GBP account trading EUR/USD has the pip value calculated in USD, then converted to GBP. As the GBP/USD rate moves, the pip value in pounds shifts even if the underlying USD pip value is fixed. This is why a calculator that pulls live rates is more accurate than a static reference table.
